The cat is reportedly hiding under the steps, and growling. How threatening can that be? I have a "nasty cat", who doesn't like other cats, children, vets, or strangers, and our front window used to be secured with a cat net (we now have Petscreen), and after one or two people reached up and put their fingers through the net to try to touch Jamie, and got bitten and/or scratched, I put a "Beware of Cat" sign in the window. Sorry, but a cat isn't going to run up and attack somebody if he/she is left alone.
It could be the uniform. We used to have a male Airedale who practically destroyed our front door every time the mailman came. Once the guy got used to taking off his hat before delivering the mail, Priam greeted him with lots of tail wagging.
