Hi

Welcome to TCS
I'm sure he will get used to a new name, it will probably take him a little while to settle in a new home anyway, and I don't think changing his name will make much difference.
Good Luck and i hope you will show us some photos of him, we like photos here

Hello and welcome

If you use his new name when petting him, or feeding he'll soon learn it.

Go for it, and use his new name as much as possible! It is always good to talk to new kitties while they are adjusting to a new home, so every time you do, call his name to get his attention(you might need outside distractions as well at first), and he will know his new name before you !

There's no place like home
I found a 10 year old male one time and when we couldn't locate the owners we adopted him. He responded to his new name in a matter of hours. Same happened when we found a 3 year old stray female.

We want pictures!!

I changed Persi's name from Puffy after having him about two weeks. He was only nine weeks old so in his case I do not believe it had much impact at all. Here is what my cat book says about choosing a name:

1. He needs a short name.
2. Use the same name every time you call him.
3. Make sure something pleasant happens whenever you call him.

The latter really worked in Persi's case. I kept some Pounce in my pocket and whenever he hears his name, he comes running. But the book also says to not give him a treat EVERY time he comes. So after a while he starts coming out of habit, but still reinforce that habit now and then with another treat. I am only repeating what my book says and what worked VERY well with Persi.

Awww!
I'm sure he'll be fine with a new name.
And as for the litter tray question, if you keep directing him towards the litter tray and placing him in there every so often he'll soon get used to it.

Cant wait to see pics

So this train he's arriving on... I guess it's called the Cattanooga Choo-Choo?

(With apologies to those not old enough to know the song...)

Hmmm, maybe I'm not the oldest person on here, after all.

Names with a vowel ending (or sound like) work best. Is the name from the breeder a nickname or a registered name? Most of my cats had different names from the registered name (or part of it) for call names. For example: Spooky was his call name - registered name was Top Secret.

Charlie is call name - registered name is Charlie Wonka.

Just use it with food, treats, petting, playing till he responds. And to tell the truth, if he doesn' respond to the name you choose, it could be that he doesn't like it! I'm serious. I've had to change names because the cat really didn't like the name you picked

With the litter box, confine him to the bathroom when you can't supervise him.

when she found us and followed us home (3 blocks) we decided we had to keep her but were a bit hesitant with having to house and box train a cat we went out and bought a box and food dishes etc..
the second i put it down she was there to investigate we have moved it numerous times since then (we moved to a new apt) and she has found it every time
although she was only a few months old when she found us i believe some one else belonged to her becuase she was so well behaved and well trained so she obviously had a name for many many months she wouldnt come when we called her that was 7 months ago and she is now responding to her name
(only when she wants something lol)
