Nutro sold to Mars....

With the sale of Nuto to Mars....
another independent pet food company has been absorbed into a larger conglomerate.
The recent recalls, point out the fact that we desperately need options.

How do you feel about this latest loss of another independent pet food company?

Probably because they are a small company and lost so much face when they recalled some food, assured us the rest was safe, and then recalled the rest of it. There was even a Nutro Rep at Petco when I went shopping for food trying to convince me that Nutro was operating out of an abundance of caution even though most of their food was still on the shelf. She was very nice and helped me pick out food that wasn't even Nutro, but it was her assignment to assure people what was on the shelf ws safe.

I won't be surprised when this happens to other companies. Sadly, Iams has P&G to absorb its losses, Purina has Nestle, etc etc, but these companies who are strictly pet food are almost being forced into selling. Just another in the many bad outcomes of this debacle.

That's sad. I hope it doesn't happen to too many more of the other independent companies.

i'm not too happy about it. i wasn't happy when Royal Canin was bought out either. RC nutrition formulas and Sensible Choice changed. they no longer test for urine pH and have very little on their "guaranteed analysis" on the bag. i really don't think this is good for nutro.

i was going to switch to nutro senior, but after this bag of nutro NCCC senior we're going to try out wellness indoor (which replaces wellness super5mix senior). nothing good ever comes of companies bought out by large corporations...iams/eukanuba formulas went down the toilet when they got bought by P&G. iams used to be so good it was only sold through specialty stores and vets.

No, I am not happy..nor are the pet retailers on a list I'm on who carry the Nutro line. They do not want to offer foods available at your local grocery store, and quality is always an important issue for the boutiques, and non-chain pet stores.

I do not believe, unless Mars retains current Nutro staff and recipes, that this bodes well for the brand...I am afraid there will be changes both in content and in where it is sold...that it will become a cheaper line with emphasis only on making profit.

I believe that Mars picked Nutro up for a song compared to what it would have cost pre-recall...as my understanding is they picked the rights to Greenies for a song after all the issues that popped up with that treat.

All I can say is support those independant cat food companies - be it the raw folks like Honest Kitchen and Raw Advantage, or companies such as Evangers, Merricks, and many more.

Mars does not control formulas, that is completely the brands doing. They just make the stuff and do what they're told.

As for plants "changing" formulas, they have nothing to gain by adding ingredients not in the formula, that costs them extra money. However if a brand provides the bags for dry/labels for wet the brand makes them use those up before providing more. Even if there is a formula change that would affect ingredient list. The plants can do nothing about that, they have to use what the brand provides.

This should ease concerns about Mars and Nutro...

Nutros founder stayed on thru the Baine purchase of Nutro and IS STILL and will remain Nutros president..Nutro s management will stay in place and run it as a stand alone unit

I know other info I cannot share but I am sure this will not change Nutros quality

I know it wasnt sold for a song and THAT some VERY BIG FOOD guys tried to buy Nutro yet the founder wouldnt allow the sale ... Nutro is now back to family owned it is just a BIG BIG familiy

You know....it helps to know that management is staying the same, but it really will take a long time for me to trust Nutro again. I honestly don't think I'll feed their wet food anymore, ever. I only feed dry MAX cat because its the only UTI safe food I can find.

If they start messing with the formulas, etc....I am so done with Nutro for good. I just don't have time to mess around with them!

Kinda OT -- does anyone have a list or know of a website that lists all the independent Cat food makers?

I feed Nutro -- or used too -- I'm thinking I'll probably switch after this last bag because I'm so worried about all the recalls.

Truely that would be a small list ... As we have found out many smaller companies ACTUALLY DO NOT make evan there dry food...

Merrick and Evangers make there own food ... but a quick google of Merricks owner will yeild you alot of ??? able practices....

I am not sure they deserve all the questions...I know there was a legitmate issue a few years ago, but with my first business, when I dealt with them, I was so impressed with their customer service, their products, their attitudes towards how to do business.

I honestly think their up front religion has ruffled a lot of feathers, and that has to be kept in mind when assessing any negative comments.

Not to hijack this thread, but wanted to say I take some of those comments with a big grain of salt.

nothing about religion or customer service more him being in trouble with the Fda for wanting to use the "4 d " animals in pet and human food... Pat do correct me but that was the jist of what I read and then stopped reading

Hmm, I thought the wheat gluten contamination only affected certain wet foods. I don't think nutro dry foods have wheat gluten in them (or most dry foods for that matter).

The whole pet food recall thing kinda just passed over my head. I guess it helps to read the ingredient labels.
