Rendering plants- euthanized pets?

Ann Martin & Pet food recall video

I was watching the local news tonight, and saw this little segment (posted above at the top of the article). I have read her book, Food pets die for, but I will admit I didn't walk away with this sense of awe at how much more I knew now that I was 'in the know'.
Anyway, my point is about the rendering plants allegedly (still) using euthanized companion animals and this ending up in the pet food supply. Martin talks in her book about this. This video touches base with this- but the current owners of a particular plant here in Columbus are saying that they don't use euthanized animals...but they (researchers?) are saying that the chemical/substance that is used to euthanize animals is being found in certain pet foods. Do you think that any of the pet food companies are, or are not, using euthanized pets? Knowingly, or not?

I just recently read Ann N. Martin's "Protect Your Pet", and have pre-ordered the revised edition of the book you mentioned. I've also read a new German "black book" on the European pet food industry, "Katzen würden Mäuse kaufen" (Cats would buy mice), by Hans-Ulrich Grimm, which MasterFoods (the European producer of Whiskas, Sheba, Pedigree Pal and Caesar) tried to keep off the market. Yes, I think some pet food producers are using rendered companion animals, in many cases knowingly.

Am I shocked? No, not after the revelations of the BSE scandal in Britain.

My thoughts exactly. After I spent a year and a half working for a lab that studied foodborne zoonoses (diseases that get transferred to humans from animals via food, such as mad cow and E. coli), very little would surprise me about how pet food is made. Or food in general.
