Probably more than any other behavior subject, I have seen keeping cats off of counters talked about here on The Cat Site and the most discussed method of accomplishing this has been using some form of squirt bottle or squirt gun.

What is the first disadvantage of using a squirt bottle or gun

And, the second paragraph says First, it could possibly....which is what the original question asked so you are the KatKwiz Whiz of the Day!
I can tell you for a fact this is true, sneaking a squirt in on your cat; they know that you are doing it!
