I think my cat may have worms. I have made an appointment to visit the vet on Friday but was wondering how it could have happened. She is an indoor only cat, never goes outside. Only eats high quality cat food and no people food, except an occasional lick of the spoon after I eat some vanilla ice cream. How could she have managed to pick up worms? Thanks for any insight you may have.

If she has fleas-the fleas may have transmitted them to her or have their been any new additions (small animals) to your home?

Human food does not give animals worms, whoever started that myth was certainly confused, else we'd have worms from it too.

You can bring fleas in on your cloths, they're so tiny you'd never notice them. The cat then gets worms from ingesting the fleas while grooming itself. Other types of worms, round worms (iirc), can come from eating rodents carrying the worms.
Generally when you take your cat in for it's annual check up it doesn't hurt to go ahead and ask the vet to worm the cat. The vet will weigh the cat and pill it right at the office.

You can also accidently bring flea eggs in on your clothes or shoes.

You'll need to deflea her too. The best treatment is a spot on treatment that goes on the back of the neck like Program, Advantage, Revolution or Frontline.

It depends on what kind of worms she has. Tapeworms (you will see little rice specks around her bottom or in her bedding) come from fleas. All it takes is one little flea to come in and her to swallow it. If she goes outside then of course she may have worms, no question.

With roundworms or hookworms, those can be picked up may ways.

Just have the vet deworm her. Did you see the worms or what makes you think she has them?

They can be passed from their mother and from fleas. The larvae can lay dormant (I am not 100%, I remember my vet saying something like that). They are easily treated. ne of my cats had them ( and I knew it) So to the vet I went and the test was negative. BUT later that day she vomited them up! so back to the vet and I said, "I told you so!"
