The kittens (6 weeks old tomorrow!) started pooping randomly on my carpet, so I moved them into the bathroom. They pooped behind the toilet mostly for the first few days, but then I laid down newspaper behind the toilet where they were excreting. Now they don't seem to be pooping anywhere. The only place I can imagine them going is underneath the cabinet. I haven't seen them go in or come out of the cabinet as I have when they've done it in the kitchen. How can I train them to use the newspaper-lined tray I've set out for them as their litter pan instead of as a bed?!? They have a bed that they all use and love, but still occasionally use what I want them to poop on as a little bed, too...

What kind of litter are you using? I'd find an extra large dog crate and crate the kittens till they go in the litter. Or if they go on paper, then put the paper in the litter pan to attract them.

Ok, here is what I did with Hunter, and Lucky when they were kittens, Hunter, it didn't take him very long, all I did was put him in the litter box. But Lucky, she was the tuffy! I put Lucky in, she sniffed, the started to shuffle her front paws into it, and kept on doing it, every time I found poop. It took a few days for her to get it. But she got it eventually!
They will get it! Thats how I litter trained Lucky, but I will have to litter train 3 babies in a few weeks! So good luck! I am glad I will be out of school for it!

Is their mother with them? She will take care of cleaning up after them if she is. Is she the one that you are having the problems with, using the dirty litter box? If you are just laying the paper in the tray flat, try shredding it into little pieces so that they will have something to scratch over the poo,in order to "bury" it.

Cats have a natural digging instinct. Try using real boxes and litter and see if that helps. Don't get the clumping kind because kittens tend to eat litter and it can clog up their GI tract. Use the cheap, clay litter or some other litter that says it's safe for kittens.

Is momma the same cat you're caring for as a favor for your friend?
