India court orders Gere's arrest for "obscene"
i hope they put him in jail for a least 20 years for
such a horrid crime.( at least then i wont have to watch his movies anymore)

That is so silly!

But, I guess I can understand....I mean, it's their culture, he did violate it. And obviously he gives a rip.....working on a movie.

I think the worst part is that he doesn't seem to care a whole lot.

Uh, righto. Sure, I think it's very, very important to respect the customs of other countries at all times wherever possible, but didn't that article say it was mostly Hindu vigilante groups that protested? Jeez, lighten up dudes.

It all looks pretty innocent to me. They said it was fringe groups who were bringing up the issue. Just like our fringe groups here who do most anything for headlines to promote their cause.

He wasn't overtly sexual. The woman he kissed was not protesting.

I like Gere though, so am not looking for a reason to bash him.

Seems the "clinch" was on a lot of newspapers in public, even though the public displays of affection are frowned upon. Kinda sounds like our media here.

No way do I think Gere should be imprisoned for 3 months.

As this article says, more attention should be focused on the HIV crisis, NOT a silly embrace. People are the same the world over.

True, would be interesting to see what would happen - especially if his friend, The Dalia Lama, came along.


edit: didn't mean you or anyone here was bashing him. The media and the radicals there are.

lol the pic she does not look much like she is hmm enjoying it,
this kinda stuff just reminds me, of Indo, how manypeople will give you dirty looks even for holding hands in public. man some of the looks We would get on the train if itta went to sleep on and was leaning on me.

I've seen the video of him kissing her several times on TV, as I'm sure most people have. She DID NOT look bothered or offended by it at all. I'm no Richard Gere fan, by any means, but I think it's absolutely ridiculous that they want to arrest him for it. Apparently it was not just him, but her as well that they wanted to arrest for this.

It was just an innocent display of affection, and nothing overtly sexual in any way. It looked more like a kiss of joy and happiness, to me.

I wish they would just drop this. Just let it go. I don't see any crime that was committed here.

IMO - it's just too silly to even give newpaper space or media time to. What a crock.

It's a good thing it was her and not me - I would have jumped that man's bones! How lucky is that girl anyway - I'm so jealous!

And her appearance on Big Brother was what Indian culture is all about?

Then again, think back to some of the things Americans have flipped out about, like that one woman's boob on tv during a football game or the fact that the President cheated on his wife... a lot of people elsewhere wondered what we were so uptight about.

The point isnt whether Shilpa Shetty was offended or not or if such action is viewed as 'normal' or 'uncriminal' to the rest of the world, IMO. Its about the laws of a country that should be enforced if people are to have general respect for the legal system. Of course, we can debate if the law should be changed. But while there is no change, the law should be upheld and Richard Gere should get no special treatment.

Shilpa Shetty - the contributing ruin of a lot of people it seems lol....the UK people will know what Im going on about (Jade, Jo and now Gere lol)

Richard Gere has spent time in that part of the world before and he has worked for an independant Tibet for years. I know he is a Buddist not a Hindu but I think he knows the culture in that part of the world. He should have known better but chose to do what he did.

I agree...I think the whole thing is just stupid...they need to get over it She praticipated as well....are they going to lock her up too
