My little kitty Gizmo is about 3 months old. And every night about bedtime, he gets very sleepy and bites his tail! I wouldn't mind so much but his tail gets all nasty and wet and matted. And he does it the morning too when i wake up. But only at those time. Does anyone know why he might so this? He is the best little baby but sometimes he does it so loud i wakes me up!!! Well if anyone knows i would like to know something at least!

Is he really biting it or is he sucking it. It looks and sounds the same. Id he is sucking on it, it is because he was weaned a little too early. They do it because it comforts them.

Sometimes cats bite themselves to relieve stress. It can definitely be self sucking as well like Sandie said. In fact if the area is just wet and not raw, then it's probably is sucking. He could grow out of it with time or not....

By the way, I'm moving this thread to the behavior forum and deleting the other thread there (because it's a double thread and we want to avoif double postings).

I think it is sucking. Do you think it is because i got him so young? he was only 6 weeks when i got him. It might be. Well thank you for your advice. If anyone else has any ideas please tell me!!!!

Yes, 6 weeks is real young to be taken from mom. Sometimes you just cant help it with strays or ferals though. Sucking really cant be stopped. They do it to bring comfort. If you are really concerned with him loosing fur on the tail you can try putting some bitter apple spray or some chew guard on it. It is safe, it just tastes like poo. If there's no harm done I would just let him do it.

That is really all i am worried about (losing the fur on his tail) I also worried that he may be stressed out. But i couldnt imagine why. Oh well thank you so much for your insight.
