The weirdest thing happened.

First a little background info: My dog Moscow normally barks or growls at people who wander near our house. The bark is usually reserved for people who come nearby, and the growl applies to anyone who lingers within our property area. That only applies for people outdoors, when they are invited in, he's the nicest thing on 4 legs... well except for Cairo. Cairo loves visitors and flirts all day long with them by rolling around on the floor in front of them, doing figure-eights, etc.

Well, Moscow was visiting a friend a few days ago, and so it was just me and the cats in the house. Cairo was in one of my office windows. I heard a couple people talking outside, and then Cairo started growling and it sounded just like Moscow! It was loud and persistant. I looked out the window and sure enough there were 3 girl-scouts (I think) in my driveway! I was starting to wonder if she was gonna bark too.

When I went downstairs to answer the door she didn't come but stayed upstairs growling until they went away. It was so weird. Since Moscow came back, she's back to her normal self, sticking to silent observation. Do you think she thought she had to do his job while he was away?

Does anyone else's cat play guard dog?

Not yet, but the way Charlie acts with Keno, I guess he might learn a 2nd language eventually. That was a cute story

All of my cats growl when someone comes to the door but cat-like, not dog-like.

I used to pet sit a dog who learned how to hiss like a cat though. She was a Scottie and she was SO proud of herself. She thought the cat was the coolest thing she'd ever met.

I know what you mean. Sometimes Cairo and Moscow will "talk" to eachother, and it's so adorable. She meows her little heart out as she weaves between his legs, while he "buff"s and makes little talking noises that are really hard to describe.

Awww! A long time ago when I used to care for feral cats there was a single long-haired kitten abandoned by his mom. At the same time I had a prize-winning long-haired blue-eyed baby bunny who's mom died. I put the two of them together for a day just to simplify things, but it ended up being a lifetime friendship. The two were inseparable! The bunny started taking on habits of a cat, and the cat started doing bunny things. Like hopping, and stalking and wrestilng. It was so cute!
