She was much older, though, high school. All that was bad enough, but leaving a 9 year old basically alone in a public rink is just unbelievable! I hope heads will roll over that one!
Rest assured, heads will roll and butts will be chewed.

Excuse me? I agree- heads need to roll and butts need to be chewed!

Now this was a school sponsored trip right? Who sponsored it? The school or the PTA? In dd's elementary (and the middle school oldest dd goes to) these kind of things are handled by the PTA. And the PTA has rules that they have to follow. At dd's elementary one, the parent had to stay there with the kid they were taking the whole time.

Oldest dd had a skating party last week (7th grade) for being on A/B honor roll. I could drop her off, but ONLY her. If I wanted to take the 4th grader, I would have to stay there. And, I had to sign a permission slip. The principal, 6th grade guidance councilor (sp) and one of the assistant principals was there the whole time.

Somebody at your school screwed up BIG time.

Yeap
They screwed up.
I was told this is the first trip like this (skating) that they've done for the school. The principal and other staff were there, but left around 2:00-2:30?

That is just unbelievable!!! Rediculously unbelievable!

Now when I was in Junior high, we did go to Hershey park and walked around without a teacher, but when I was in 6th grade and went to Canada, we had one chaperone for 4 kids. I never saw anything wrong with it then, but I guess that times are different.

Alycia - go give them
. That is so irresponsible of the school to represent it as a school event and then provide no supervision. I'm glad Justice is ok.

Nuh uh...might give me away!
Have you contacted any other parents? You might get even more of a response if MANY parents went in at the same time, with the same anger and frustration.

I'm sooo sorry that the stupid "adults" did that. THat was REALLY wrong.

What happened to the days when one teacher had maybe 10 kids assigned to her,and she stayed with them?? Things like that burn me up! If you get no where with the school board or the director of schools...go to the State Board of Education! This can't go on in this day and age!!
When I went on my 8th grade graduation trip to Hersheypark (an amusement park) that is what our teachers did. Just let us loose and we had to meet them at a certain time. But this was back in 1984. It is SO sad that kids today can't have that kind of freedom...to many psychos in the world today.

I can't believe the "chaperones" just left! I would be raising Holy

I told him I didn't have the truck but would call my mom to come and get him and in the mean time to tell the teacher or staff that was chaperoning the trip about. He told me there wasn't any!!!!!!!!

I freaked!!!!
I called R'Club to ask who was watching them. The director said it wasn't thier trip, it was the school who arranged it and she just found out from someone else that the school was basically just dropping them off and that they were leaving it up to the staff at the skating rink to watch them. She said over and over she wasn't sure if this was the case but heard it from another parent.
I am FUMING
!!!!!!
My mom is there right now picking him up and getting to the bottom of it.
If they DID just drop them off then there will be HELL raised!
Why would anyone in thier right minds drop a bunch of elementary school kids off at a PUBLIC skating rink and leave it up to a bunch of bratty teenage floor guard to watch them????

If my mom doesn't get any answers today, rest assured his school will get a visit from me tomorrow morning and it won't be a pleasant one at ALL!

When I talked to his dad, he was also under the impression that teachers will be there.
OMG! That's a child abduction waiting to happen!!!! The police should be notified about that!

Yeah, you want to be able to raise all kinds of heck without showing your fanny, I hope you are able to get to the bottom of this too. It is horrible to leave children without some kind of supervision.

Keep us posted on what is happening.

You do not hafta know them personally, ya'll have something in common already, your children were left at the skating ring alone. That is enough to be able to talk to another parent.

Dropping them off at an ice rink and leaving them there without supervision is a failure of their responsibilities.
We used to have trips to ice rinks when I was a kid and there had to be kids and responsible adults (either teachers or kids' parents) in a certain ratio - I'm pretty sure that's the law for school trips here.
I work at a kindergarden/day care and we have rules that we hafta follow. We hafta have so many chaperones going. We have all kinds of guidelines that our health department gives us that we have to do.

We are a church day care, but even public schools have some kind of guideline that they have to follow.

I do hope that you get to the bottom of this. And I would not stop at the principal either, I would do like you and go to the school board, I would have heads on a silver platter.

How did the kids get to the skate rink? How were they to get homr or back to school? Was this during the school day?

I am a teacher and there is NO way I would do something like this! You have placed your child in MY care and I will do everything to make sure they are safe and cared for.

You may not be able to get someone fired but please make sure that there is a WRITTEN policy put in place so NOTHING like this happens again! There should also be writtien letters put in every staff members files about this OUTRAGE!

Thank goodness your son had the firefly phone and you cared enough to listen to him!

My heart just about stopped when I read this. Thank goodness he had the presence of mind to call you - what a smart little boy you have! So much could have gone wrong. I hope that you get some type of explanation and apology for what happened. Make sure that your son knows that he did the right thing in calling you.

Even though I don't have children I am very surprised that a school would do this. Was there some type of permission slip you were givin outlining this event?? (for proof). Its really negligent on the part of the school and the teachers to do this-did they want the afternoon off from work?? I hope you get some answers.

So I spoke with the prinicipal this morning. I told him how upset I was about all this. He told me that this wasn't a PTA funded or sponsored trip. That's when I went off. Had myself or ANY of the parents known that, we would NOT have allowed our kids to go. It wasn't clearly stated or explained that they were leaving it up to the skating staff to watch our children. I then asked about the contact info in case someone got hurt. He told me that the manager of the rink had HIS cell phone number...NOT good enough. They would have to call him, then he would have to go to the school, get the info then to the rink. VERY irresponsible!
Then I told him "What would happen if little "Billy's" dad wasnt allowed to see him and had heard he was going to be skating because a friend's son goes to the same school, and he went up to the rink, and picked him up and they were in Michigan at Midnight? Little "Billy" isn't gonna tell anyone he's not supposed to see his dad. He's happy to see him." I then asked him "Can YOU sleep at night knowing YOU allowed that to happen because YOU were neglegent? I know I can't". He just got quiet. Complete silence for about 15 seconds. He then
said "You know what, You're right. I didnt think about that". OMG!
I told him "HOW COULD YOU NOT THINK ABOUT THAT!? YOU'RE THE PRINCIPAL! OUR children are in YOUR care! These things happen EVERY day!"

I was livid! He then went on to say thank god my son has a cell phone and enough sense to call me. I DARED him to say anything about him carrying a cell to school. But he didn't. Also, the R'Club staff this morning said she had about 10 other parents who said they were going to the principal this morning. Im happy to know that R'Club had NOTHING to do with this trip and when they do have field trips they are WELL supervised!

Im still contacting the school board on this. I can NOT let this go. I had a VERY hard time sleeping last night.

I do have to say I am VERY proud of my son for calling me. It give me peace of mind knowing he knows when something isn't right and he's comfortable enough to come to me.

OH good grief!! I'm so proud of your boy hun, he sounds like he's been very very well raised. Good on you!! And I'm very glad there are parents out there who are willing to go to a principal and scream the way you did!
You get a standing ovation from me! Heads should roll for this one.

You're a shining example to parents, you should be proud.

Ive been keeping up with this thread since it started and Im still trying to figure out what I want to say in regards to this situation. As a parent of future school children...Im really effin P.O-ed.....My girls are my life my lil peanuts and Im sure everyone else on here with kids feels the same way. I would be ready to murder someone right now if I was in your shoes. Ive lost a lot of my friends to random acts of violence and car accidents. Most recently a friend of mine died in the Va Tech shootings. The thought of elementary school children being alone at a skating rink baffles me. My mom wouldnt let me alone at our local skating rink until I was 16 and by then it was lame. I used to bash my mom all the time for being up my butt but now being a mom Im glad that she did cuz Im constantly up my kids butts asking what they are doing and stuff like that. That school needs a major overhaul. No matter what the situation of funding or how that trip was planned the permission slip should have had ALL information on it and I know my old permission slips had contact info on it so the teachers had it right on hand. And if there werent going to be teachers there then why did they hand out slips in the first place. That right there tells you school field trip!!!! That freakin principal needs to get his head out of his butt and pray that he doesnt end up getting his pants sued off. Talk to other parents because Im sure someone else is sitting at home saying the same things you are!!! Dont let this go down without a fight because the next time they do something like that a kid could get hurt....Or worse! Nip it in the butt while you can have some control over the consequences....And be proud of Justice. Most kids might have just said screw it instead of calling their mom!!! Youve got one amazing kid there!!!!
