Jade apparently discovered she has teeth about 30 minutes ago.
She was playing on the counter...and she walked over & bit my hand. Those teeth are sharp! I scruffed her in a similar manner to a mother cat, keeping her feet on the ground. Was that right?

How can I teach her not to bite?

Just FYI- She also discovered she can pat at a toy. I know I've said this before, but she is the cutest thing on four paws!

with all my kittens iv allowed them to *play* bite at my hands , now i know a lot of people say this is a big no no , but none of mine have grown up to bite or scratch. if they got very rough like yourself i scruff the neck *feet on the floor* and say no , then stop playing for a little while. weather this is the correct advice or not though is another matter , but for me this works.

I have found the best way to discourage biting is to use toys as toys and not your hands.

According to my new bible (cat behavior book which is really good) "Hands should be used only for stroking, feeding and holding" *. The book says its easy for humans to fall into the habit of reinforcing biting behaviour in play. And eventually the cat thinks fingers = exciting game which my human owner LOVES to play.

In practice using teasers as toys has avoided biting problems in my kittens. Olivia started to develop this when we first got her, but Ive managed to 'tease' it out of her.

I had a singleton foster baby last season and she was a NIGHTMARE and i would hiss and angry-yowl like a momma cat and stop playing/leave the area.

Worked WONDERS. but it did a take awhile. She really had no idea how to play appropriately.
