Questions about my new Russian Blue

Hello everybody I am not new, but I haven't been on this site for 3+ years now. Some ppl might remember from before when my Mentos got sick and passed away. I finally decided to get another cat. I saw a Russian Blue at a cat show several years ago, and always wanted one. His name is Pillow, and is almost 3 months old.

I have 2 general questions

1) I never had any allergic reactions to my previous cat. However with Pillow, I have small reactions where I get slightly stuffy nose (can still breath), and my chest tightens a little bit. Nothing I can't live with. Was just curious, will this go away? Because I've heard owners who have grown tolerant to their cat's allergens. If not, what can I do? I can't keep him off my bed, and I live in a studio where I can't have him anywhere else. I already bought a Honeywell HEPA Filter, and I wipe everything down.

2) This cat loves company, he is always following me around, and wanting to play with me. Because I live in a studio, I can't sleep, he is always stepping on my face, running around. I have had 3 sleepless nights thus far.... I tried playing with him an hour before sleeping to tire him out... but he has a lot of stamina apparently.

Lastly, I'd like to thank everybody here for helping me out. I'll post Pillow pics soon. He is a real sweetie.

I believe cat owners DO get used to their cat's dander and dander levels. i know i am allergic to my russian blue but i really don't have any ill affects anymore. And i've had him for almost a year. Stoli used to follow me around for the first few months we had him...he still does but it is not as bad. If you can ignore your cat at night he will eventually grow out of this behavior.....it's hard when you have a studio...

to TheCatSite (again, sort of!) and we're glad you decided to come back. Pillow sounds very handsome -- my sweet Nila, who's in sanctuary in Canada now (long story) is blue from nose to tail, too, though he isn't "purebred" as I don't believe in that. All of "my" cats have always been rescued from the streets, or in the case of two, adopted from a dear friend who passed away.
Anyway. Sounds like you're doing good in getting the HEPA filter; a lot of people do overcome allergies and it sounds as if yours aren't bad at all. There are shampoos and sprays and wipes one can use to keep the dander to a minimum; maybe someone on the forums knows of some and can help. If you have Petco, PetsMart or other good companion animal supply store near you, you may want to ask them about these, or ask Pillow's vet. And it sounds like Pillow is still a kitten? If so, he will "mellow out" some as he grows into adulthood, but another good thing to think about is getting him a companion (another cat!) to keep him company. Playing with him right before you go to bed is a great thing to do , but if he has a cat friend, they will also play with one another. There are also good, safe toys cats can play with all by themselves; ask at your "pet" supply store about what is available in your area.

I cannot speak for what might or might not happen to you, but I used to have moderate allergies to cats and now I have five. I know that somehow my body adjusted and I hear that others have experienced the same, but it does take time How long did you say you had pillow? I have also noticed that any time someone new comes into my family, their dander is different and I go through a period of sneezing, etc for about 2-3 weeks before I get adjusted to them.

If you post your questions to the kitten care forum, more people will be able to answer. I think because TCS is so large, members cannot read all the posts and usually go to where their interest lies. So sometimes we have to post in multiple places.

I have had Daphne for 3 weeks now so she is about 11 weeks old. I live in a studio with the two cats. There are some nights, when around 2am, I realize they will not be sleeping until 6am, nor will they allow me to sleep.

I then place Daphne in the bathroom, with her food, water, radio on classical station turned low, her little bed and litter box. She is okay in there for a few hours while I get some much needed uninterrupted sleep. I feel like a complete meanie when I do this, but she is used to it from the first week when I was introducing her to Seb. I think she usually sleeps, I never hear her meowing to get out.

She is getting better, it just takes time. They are like toddlers at this age.

Please keep us up to date on how he is doing.

Welcome back! Good luck with settling Pillow in. I hope you got the answers to your questions in the relevant forums.

For 2) I recommend lots of toys to keep him occupied...teasers (e.g. Da Bird), cat tree, toy mice etc. That will help use Pillow's energy up!

Thats the joy of kittens though...full of life and energy. And its great Pillow loves human company!

I was home most of the day this saturday (I'm in Taiwan, so I'm a day ahead of y'all), and by the time I was ready to sleep, he was pretty tired as well. However, he was up at 6am ready to play again... but I was pretty content with 6 hours of sleep.

I'll try to ignore him when he is walking on my face, to see if he'll lose interest and stop doing that. Thanks everyone for your help.

My allergy seems to be improving, I dusted down my entire room and floors today to redue him picking up dust while exploring. I think I'm more allergic to the dust he picks up then the cat itself. Because I can pick him up and rub my nose all over him and be ok.

However, whereever he digs his nails into, that itches. But only for about 30 minutes then it goes away.

I was diagnosed with many allergies a million years ago (yes, I am that old!)
I was told cats were one of my worst allergies and that I should never have them as a pet. I have had cats all my life and I do believe that I have developed allergy resistance (if there is such a thing) I am still allergic to dogs and horses, but cats no longer bother me! So go for ut, I am betting that things will subside as your system becomes aclimated to the dander!
