I wouldn't use poison outside because you can potentially kill other "good" insects and possibly birds. For outside, they have to have a mound somewhere, find the mound and pour BOILING water on the mound. This will kill them.
Inside, use some of the safer suggestions that were offered such as vinegar and water, bay leaves, or even hair spray will work. Cats don't like that because it sticks to the floor.

I use an ant killer that I get at Ace Hardware. It's called Safer Brand. It is in a bright yellow can, and it is not harmful to pets. It's made with mint oil. It kills the ants dead, and repells them because ants hate mint. It messes up their navigation system.
We were invaded last year, and I was in tears because they started in the bedroom!
Our pug Maddie kept finding the traps, and when we caught her trying to roll in antkiller outside...we had to turn to safer methods of dealing with the ants. This is the only thing that I found to work. We had to spray it multiple times though.... and heavy. It doesn't stain, and wipes up easily. Our animals simply were not interested in it. It smells VERY minty though.....
This year I am planting mint all around my house. That's what woked in the end for my parents. Anywho... here is a link to their site:

There's no place like home
If I get a full trail, I find their hole and plug it and use flea spray that is safe for cats. If there's something less than a trail, I just squish them.

This is lame, and probably inneffective...but I have noticed that the infestation subsides when it rains, almost immediately. So just today, I went outside and watered the suspect area. I plugged some of their holes too. We'll see.

I found a receipe (sp?) on yahoo and it was Vinegar, mixed with some kind of powder and water.  I shook it and poured it all over the kitchen counters and (knocking on  wood!) in 3 days I have not seen an ant.

If  only I could find the article - I saved it but where!

In rescue, when we feed at our cat stations, ants are a big issue. We usually will spray Pam cooking spray all over the feeding trays. This keeps them away for along time also safe for the kitties.

As silly as this sounds, I have gotten rid of an infestation with Windex. At the time I thought someone was secretly filming the "My big fat Greek wedding" sequel but... It worked.

I used to own a pest control company (a hundred years ago). Go outside of your house (apt building) and look very closely around the perimeter of your home to see where they are coming in and also follow them to their colony to take care of the root of the problem.

If you have a DIY pest control retailer or a pest control company with a retail store front in your area, see if they sell ADVION ANT GEL (or comparable) to the public. If they do, I've used it without incident in my home with both cats and dogs.

Of course, you don't want them to get into it and I've never had a problem with any of my pets wanting to.

I'm happy to give you the ins and outs of using that product if you can get it/feel comfortable using it in your home around your cat. :-)

Good luck! Those pantry ants are buggers!!

I made a mistake in my Post - it i supposed to be    1 Gallon Vinegar,  2cups epson salts, and 1/4 dawn dishwashing soap ( the one that  is BLUE)

It is to kill weeds but I put it in a spray bottle and shook it up and poured it all over my sink drainboard and window shelf and it has been about a week now and NO MORE ANTS!!!!!

I use orange oil.  Safe and non-toxic.  There's also tons of uses for it in your kitchen and around the yard.

Ants are on my "creep me out" list.  Here in the desert, I come across all kinds of creepy crawlies that I barely even blink at; black widows, wolf spiders, scorpions, etc.,.  But ants....  I've had a few experiences with swarms that were... well... lets just say they left an impression... *shudder*

Every year I fight those little exoskeleton monsters.  Killing them in their tracks is just a tedious war.  Bleach, vinegar, salt, DE... none of them are all that effective in my book.  The only thing that I've found that works is that bait stuff that they take back to the nest.  Just have to find a good little nook that the cats can't get to... lay down the bait, and enjoy an ant free summer.

I was looking at a site about natural pest control a few weeks ago and they recommended a neat way to get rid of fire ants. Maybe it will work with regular ants?
They said if the queen is killed, the rest of the ants will leave. A day before it is going to rain, sprinkle instant grits around the ant hill or where you see the ants. The workers will carry the grits to the Queen. When it rains, the grits in her stomach will expand and kill her.
It sounds so devious yet simple, it makes me want to rub my hands together and evil laugh just thinking get about it.

Hello All,

I m solution to suggest please follow me killing ants more tips use it.

Shower vinegar close baseboards, in any splits, and on ledges where they might travel. You can enable vinegar to dry on surfaces or wipe with a spotless fabric – this wipes out their compound trail and will stop a portion of the stragglers. Rehash a few times each day. (discover white vinegar here)

Rehearsing great sanitation hones is a standout amongst other approaches to make your home less alluring to ants. Keep spills, morsels, and junk tidied up in the kitchen. Make certain to store all sustenance – particularly desserts – in firmly fixed holders or zip-top packs. They will get into things like containers of nectar that have trickles as an afterthought or around the top, so fixing the jug in a zip-top pack will secure it.
