A word about OFF TOPIC posts in IMO threads

A few members seem to be developing a habit of posting personal messages to each other in threads that have little or nothing to do with the topic under discussion. This makes threads unnecessarily long, and causes many to lose interest in the discussion. Such posts will quite simply be deleted in the future.

If you feel you have to exchange such personal remarks with another member, please send a personal message, or join the subscribers' lounge, where such posts are welcome, and refrain from adding so much ballast to IMO threads.

That wasn't the best choice of a smiley, given very recent events. Sorry, that was thoughtless. I started participating in competitive shooting (school rifle team) at the tender age of 14, so I tend to think of shooting only in terms of sports.

I thought the mod power was fairly funny, but I guess given recent events, maybe not.

I 'helped' my daddy shoot a cannon in the army at 2, so I guess I am immune to the gun thing to some extent

As threatened, I have gone through some recent threads and edited or deleted personal remarks. This forum is not for personal messages.
Another problem is hijacked threads. Reviewing some new posts this evening, I found discussions of the UN, gun control, abortion and marijuana in just one thread, which was thus rendered incomprehensible.

Please think before you post.

Sorry part of that was me... Got wrapped in the verbal chaos and extended a personal overshare or sha'll I say learned experience! Sorry won't happen again!

I didn't even make the connection. I'm sure no one thought you were being crass. Competitive shooting is a neat sport. I've never participated but I've watched others do it and I'd like to try it someday (when I've less hobbies!)

I am curious though, Tricia - what if a thread that starts on one topic naturally progresses into another topic that is still related to the first? I certainly agree that jumping all over the shop is pointless and can get redundant, as can personal posts to other members (not really appropriate in IMO I agree) but what about natural evolution of topics?

I'd say it depends on how many tangents there are, and whether the thread is evolving naturally, or somebody with an agenda is obviously trying to derail the discussion. I've seen a lot of the latter in my 27 years of teaching, so I normally recognize it when it happens here.
