I just wanted to update everyone real quick on little Linus's situation right now. This morning i FINALLY figured out EXACTLY what was causing all of his problems! His sister Lily!!!! I was feeding them before work and getting ready to take Linus in. I was feeding Cali (formerly Lola - she's spoken for) and Linus and Lily were in the cage. I turned around for two seconds only to see Lily holding poor little linus down and trying to nurse on him!!!
Now i have had kittens attempt to nurse tails/ and paws before but never....umm private parts shall we say (i have always heard of it happening- but have never had it happen personally in all of the litters i've fostered-talk about a first time for everything!). I immediately removed her off of him and seperated them. It is normal for kittens to try and "nurse" one another - even if they recieve enough nourishment and are adequately fed....they are naturally used to staying "latched on" to their momma's nipples...even if it's just to suckle for comfort- so that's not uncommon for a kitten to nurse on another on-so that's why lily did it. /I took Linus with me this morning to the shelter to see of the vet wanted to do surgery on him. (when i weighed him last night he only weighed 14 ounces). She looked at him and to my suprise- what i thought were his testicals messed up was his penis. She said it was soooooo swollen it was hard to tell apart. His entire little bottom area is swollen and just bright bright red. It looks aweful. She said that it was he was way too small for surgery and that the best thing to do was to apply a warm compress (wash rag with warm water) and keep it on him for a while to see if the tissues will shrink and sofen so she can push it back into place.) So from 7am till 12pm I was holding compresses on him as were some of our volunteers while i assisted with surgeries. By the time lunch rolled around the redness had lessned, but his little privates were still sooooooo swollen and painfull. The vet put some steriod cream on it and some ky jelly to soothe/soften the area. when she did that it made him urinate (he has not been able to potty because the swelling is soo bad.) and goodness- that kitten can pee like a race horse
at least according to the vet
(you kinda had to be there, he peed on one of my coworkers before we could move him lol.) So i think little Linus felt a little better after he was able to go potty. She put more steroid and ky on him before we left for the day and told me to go home and put hot compresses on him several times a day and to put cortizone on him 2-3 times a day to get the swelling down. Hopefully in a few days his little parts will go back to where they should be is the plan. If not, she will try to push them back in place. So the good news is- he should NOT have to have surgery unless neithor plans work. So that's great! At least that's one thing less for me to worry about- now i'm just hoping the swelling in the tissue goes down so the little fella won't be in pain anymore and can go potty ok. Poor thing!
I feel just aweful because i didn't know for sure what was causing the swelling-otherwise i would have seperated him from the other kittens when i first got him. They are seperated now though and will remain that way. That's at the vets recommendation. So thankyou for all of the prayers and vibes everyone- i'm happy to say he didn't have surgery today. But i pray that the cortizone and compresses will work soon so we can avoid surgery all together.

Thanks Helen
I'm am a bit relieve he didn't have to have surgery today as well- with him being sooooo small- putting him under anestesia is really too risky...the vet did not want to do it because he was soo little. So as an alternative we're hoping the corizone plus the steriods he had as well as a little lubrication on the dry areas will help the situation enoguh to relive itself on its own. If it's not better in a few days the vet wants to see him and will try to push everthing back in place if the swelling is down.......if not though- he MUST have surgery, otherwise his little parts will stay sticking out like that is what she said today. So i'm hoping if i take good care of him and keep that area in good shape that it will relive itself. I feel bad seperating him from his sisters- he's really lonely and cries for them......but it's the safest thing for him right now.

There's something unbearably sweet about little Linus' story. He's stolen my heart. I swear if you lived anywhere near me I'd be one cat richer shortly. Do you have any pictures of him and his sisters? Hmm or maybe I've just missed them.... must go and check!

The little sweetheart has just had a little bit too much.... uh love (?) from his sisters. Poor little guy. I'm sure with a bit of healing time alone he'll be back to normal right away.

Uhh yeah he definitely got a bit too much "love" from his sister
Poor baby! He just breaks my heart- he was looking soooooo lonely in his carrier while i was fixing up dinner hehe so can you guess where he is now? Nestled up by my neck playing with my hair!
He's such a doll!!! I do not have any pictures posted of them yet. I will have to try and get that done soon! ( I do not have a digital camera- i have borrowed my mom's in the past when i was living at home to snap pictures, so now that i'm at Colins i need one. Colin has one but i'm not sure where it is- i'll see if i can borrow his
I was using my cell phone to take pictures but it's not working with my photobucket acct and i'm not sure how to fix it
) I'll try to see if i can borrow Colin's soon so i can snap some pictures. They're adorable!
They're little too but have big bellies (due to malnourishment before i got them) so they look like little rollie pollies when they're running around everywhere
Lily weighs 12oz, Linus 14, and Cali around 15oz. They're all little brown tiger tabbies (dsh). Right now their eyes are still blue (sooo cute!- i think they're going to change to green) and each are just adorable in their own little ways. They all wear itsy bitsy collars too so i can tell them apart. Cali's is pink with white polka dots, Lily's is purple with little daisys on it, and Linus is blue because he's a stud muffin
/ When i checked little Linus bottom a minute ago it was still really inflamed- so i'm praying it goes down soon- i know he's in pain
