If I missed this somewhere, forgive me...I did some looking around for the answer before I posted....

So I was in Pet Supplies Plus Saturday...standing in the stupid food aisle for like HOURS, I swear, reading the back of the cans for ingrediants and place of manufacturing.

Firstly...do we have to be SCIENTISTS to understand what is in this food?? I am so confused by all this jargon and have no idea what half of it is.....this sucks BIG TIME!!

Secondly....I couldn't find anything on ANY can that told me who makes the crap (sorry..but I am really getting po'd at this whole ordeal)....and I WANT to know that before I buy. It only tells me who distributes it..and NOT who made the ****.

Ya...I am getting really peeved. We TRUST these places to provide good things.....things that won't HURT anyone...

Could this happen with OUR (human) food????? Can you imagine?? To me, it is just as bad...if not worse (since our pets are helpless).....

GR.

How do I find out WHERE this stuff is made?

Perhaps the scariest part about the whole recall mess is the seemingly impossible task of tracking this stuff.

In regards to the new Natural Balance recall and the melamine found in rice protein, the USA Today article states:

Herrick also said Diamond got the rice protein concentrate from an American company, which he wouldn't name. The melamine in the Menu Foods recall was in wheat gluten imported from China.

The rice protein came from an AMERICAN company, but who wants to wager that the company themselves got it from China? This is a nightmare.

I'm thinking China myself. If you do a Google search on "rice protein concentrate" you'll see that many of the source companies are in China.

In the past Natural Balance has proudly proclaimed the fact that ingredients in it's products are from U.S. sources (except venison from New Zealand). They may want to qualify that a bit to say U.S. via ???

At the moment i am a lot more worried about where the ingredients are coming from. NB assured us all that they used only US ingredients, right? Well i don't think that moving Chinese grain products through an American company really qualifies as US ingredients.

Well, I did find a dry cat food that is grain-free and I may have to go and price that out.... Evo. I never heard of it....I guess Natura makes it??

Does that sound ok to give?

EVO is a great food, one of the best. They make it for dogs too if you have dogs. Unfortunately it can be too rich for some animals but it's worth a try since it is very high quality.

As far as who makes them and whether they are involved in the recall, this list is about as comprehensive as I have seen (but please note they did obtain the info from the companies themselves)

Of course it doesn't say where they are getting their ingredients from on the list

Funny, my city has 350,000 and I drive out to the sticks to get EVO. LOL

Here, I think it's $17 for the 6.6lb bag ?

It can and does happen to our human food. Ecoli anyone?

According to Purina, they supposedly "Have to" purchase some of their ingredients outside of the U.S.A. because the U.S. doesn't produce the kind of quantities that Purina needs. That said Purina says they buy very little from China (which seems to be true based on the fact that they've only had to recall a couple of lines of food. Mostly Alpo).

And after the Rice thing I read about this morning, I immediately went and checked "again" on the food we give Poe, (see my signature) and luckily it contains no RPC, Rice Gluten, or anything else related.

I hate to say it, but honestly I'm really glad Poe didn't like the Nutro we started feeding him at Christmas time (he kept having Diahrea) or he might be dead now.

I also have to question how foods like Nutro and EVO can claim to be super-premium pet foods if they're buying a lot of their ingredients from China, while a company like Purina is largely consider to offer crap-pet-foods, who buy very little. As evidenced by this, it's obvious that China's standards when it comes to pet-food ingredients at least are VERY low on the food chain, and the fact that China has not invited the F.D.A. (who are seeking permission) to go visit the factories to find out what went wrong is even more worrisome. It tells me that China has something to hide.

I honestly believe some sort of coalition needs to be formed to force pet food companies to stop buying products from China until China is more willing to comply with OUR needs and to force the F.D.A and/or pet food companies to test all ingredients that come from outside the U.S.A more vigorously.

It always amazes me that we have a trade embargo with Cuba (communist country) yet we get everything from clothes, to food, to iPods from China (also communist country).

That's a different purina food. I don't think it comes into my country though.
