Hi everyone

Am I right in believing that in the US, Persians have separate classes depending on whether they are open-faced type or ultra type?

I'm sure i've heard this before somewhere and thought some of the Persian people or showing people on here might be able to confirm it.

In the UK, all Persian types are shown together, but the judges always lean towards ultra type cats for the awards, so you get very few open-faced types entered.

I'm assuming you are talking about "open face" as the "doll-face" - not extreme cats? If so, they are NOT shown in the US. All persians in shows (all associations) have the extreme type.

We do break them down into divisions - solid, tabby, bi-color, parti-color (torties) and himalayan.

This is an example of the type of persian shown over here in all associations:

This is the doll-face (open) that some breeders are breeding - but they are not shown in championship classes:

It's the same here in the Netherlands, Persian cats get more and more extreme (even the silvers that used to have more nose) because that is the trend.

A friend of mine is working to bring the Doll-face (or Traditional Persian as she calls them) back into the picture.

You should check out her website if you are interested:

Those are beautiful! I think they are much cuter than the squishy faced ones. They are pretty too, but they always look like they are grumpy, lol.

Chrissy,

The persians shown here in the US are supposed to meet the breed standard for that registering association. Persians, according to the CFA to breed standard, are supposed to have a "short, snub and broad nose with a break centered between the eyes. Eyes set level and far apart giving a sweet expression." Cats that don't meet this standard would be disqualified by the judge because they don't fit the written breed standard. The persians are broken up into color classes, but they still have to fit the written breed standard for that association.

Hiya!!!!
We Persian breeders actually think 'squishy face' looks good! They may look grumpy but they are not really, in reality they are very affectionate. Its the sort of cat you either love or think yuk, personally I am on the love side, lol.

Hi GK

So when you say peoplle show them but not in champion classes are they classed as household pets or still under the Persian group? Where do exotics come in show over there, are they in with the Persians as well, same as here?

Well I have seen some pet quality longer nosed persians in the household pet classes
So maybe some are showing them there - who knows. I don't think the doll-face breeders are showing them in household pet classes - but the ones who buy them.

The Exotics used to be shown in the SH classes because of the coat. I think in the 90's it was changed to judge them by type - they fit the persian standard except for being SH. So they were put over in the LH classes in Speciality. They also changed the Balinese (LH Siamese) and Somila (LH aby) to the shorthair classes.

Was really weird in a Speciality ring to pull out a Balinese and give it __ Best SHORTHAIR when the cat had longhair
Same with the Exotic calling it a __Best LONGHAIR!
