IMO in person?

So, IMO is a great forum and a good way to get to know people, how they think, their values, what's important to them and their political and religious ideologies.

Because it's the written word, it forces you to think more carefully about what you say, because there is little emotion in writing, and so it's easy to be misinterpreted, or come off harsher than you intend, or not be able to put feeling into the things you say.

If you had to have five people here over for dinner - great food, great wine (or, insert favourite beverage ____ ), great conversation - and debate some of the things we talk about here, who would you invite?

I would certainly have Bruce and Cindy over. A good debate always needs people with opposing views on fundamental issues, not only to give it spice but also to broaden your own knowledge, and show you points of view you may not have thought of on your own. Such a great way to learn and become more rounded, by listening to people you don't often agree with!

Then somewhere in the middle I'd have Heidi. We have quite opposing views but often we are coming from the same place.

For people who I generally agree a lot with, I'd like to finish off my five with Zissou'sMom and Mirinae. I think that would make for a great well-rounded group!

I'd like to add, these are all people for whom (whether we agree or disagree) I have a great deal of respect, and who have all taught me a lot in my interaction with them.

Things that have come up in IMO that I'd love to talk about in person with them are, obviously, the war in Iraq, our justice systems, terrorism in general and how to approach it, and from today, gun control and laws.

Who would you invite? And what would you want to talk about?

not a bad list. however i would not call me a fundamentalist, my views do change on subjects, some very liberal lol

i feel bad cause i really dont know peoples names.. John(amberbodcat) hmm, neet. you have Zissou'sMom,hedi. hmm jcat. nikki. susan. reese

maybe we should just rent a hall at a local hotel and invite eveyone

i dont know about the written thing, i suck at writting, and expressing myself this way. plus i tend to do very fast due to at this time of day i am in the office.

but as long as you promise to not serve vegemite i would show up lol

You pose an interesting question. I don't know who I would invite. Do they have to be TCS members? The one thing I must ask you is have you seen the movie The Last Supper with Cameron Diaz http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113613/
It poses this very question only on a more serious level. I think you may enjoy it. Hmm now I must go think, who would I invite to dinner?.......

Lol! Vegemite is the BEST!! I shall convert you yet...it's my new mission...

I didn't mean you were fundamentalist - I was talking about fundamental issues - you know, politics, religion, things that are central, well, fundamental to our lives.

I forgot jcat - we'd probably need a really good mediator there!! Lol, and I'd like to have Neet at my house - she's pretty good at sticking me in my place and keeping me there!!

Enough of the wine and I might start agreeing with people!

Hmmm...that's a good question. I would hate to name people though. So I'll just say everyone is welcomed.

Hey now, I'll bake a cake if you can squeeze a sixth person in!

I'd love to meet some of the IMO people, because they've really taught me a lot about my OWN beliefs. Even though we may disagree on things like Sex Ed, Abortion, Taxes, and just about everything else it would be a good time!

I honestly can't say who I'd invite.

To be truthful, as I am one who almost never has people over, I would only want to invite those that are like-minded rather than inviting those whom I know I would come to loggerheads with.

I don't feel any point in naming names as this is purely hypothetical.
Oh, I'm totally there. I'll bring the diet-friendly foods! (Some of which would be very handy in the inevitable food-fight ...)

I find that the IMO forum is a lot like the discussions I have with my RL friends. We're all different people from very different backgrounds and we argue passionately all the time. While it's nice to have people to back you up, I enjoy arguing with others because I genuinely want to hear what other people have to say (when those other people are able to back up their points of view without just saying "Well, that's just what I believe, so there!" and giving me a raspberry). For the most part, I find the folks in IMO are really good at explaining their POVs and supporting their arguments, and that's really interesting to read.

People without opinions are boring. You folks can totally come to my place any time.

I'll give you a ride on the back anytime, Bruce.

Anyone else? The line forms to the left - but you'll have to agree with my lack of politics.

Oh, please do! I would love to meet your (big) babies! (Well, actually, I'd love to meet everybody's babies, but there's something particularly appealing about a great big kitty-cat ...)
lol, I don't like to talk IMO with close friends, because friends are more important to me than debate.

If I had to pick a few people, I'd choose only to listen to them and of course the people I'd pick would vary, depending on the subject.

I'd love to listen to what each and every person has to say on one subject or another.
Dude, I am so there!
I wonder sometimes what you guys would expect to see if you met me in person.

I would love to have a debate in person with someone who doesn't agree with me (as for the most part, people are friends with people who are like them) and the only one who disagrees with my politics... we try not to talk about it.

Although I have to warn you. I speak exactly like I write when I debate, so I don't know how much more emotion you would get out of me. You would probably think I'm a ditz though because of how I talk when I'm not serious. You've all seen Clueless, right? (No, I really am serious)

I will bring fondue, Jose Cuervo margaritas, and Zissou. On her leash.

Oh, and I would want to talk about war. In general.

I'm far worse at verbal debates than written ones. Can I just make the food and drinks? And perhaps hand out cat toys?

I'm confused! You can't debate with people who are your friends? Some of the best debates I've ever had are with close friends, and a lot of that is because we know we all love each other and that's why we're friends in the first place, and because we have respect and admiration for each other, and so that enriches and enlivens our debates!

You know, you reminded me of my Grandad. What a fiery old man he was - so beautiful, I loved him so much. He was Yugoslav and had lived here for a long time, was quite liberal compared to his family back home, but his week just didn't seem complete without a decent argument with someone.

Every Sunday he would turn up unannounced at our place, and within 30 minutes he and Mum and Dad would all be yelling at each other. I used to worry about it until one time I was brave enough to go in there, and everyone was arm-waving and arguing loudly, and frowning, and then I would notice that the ones not doing this were sitting there grinning - until is was their turn to frown and shout and arm-wave. They LOVED these Sunday afternoon debate sessions, and Mum and Dad still say it's one of the things they miss about him the most.

It's a joke between in-laws and close friends that if you want to get a word in when my family are all together, you'd better learn to shout louder than everyone else because otherwise nobody will hear you! It's an exaggeration - we're actually all very polite to each other - but it's a pretty good assessment nonetheless
