Why can't there be a cable plan where you can pick and choose your channels? There are about 10 channels I would be interested in getting besides the regular local channels. Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Conedy Central, VH1, Family Channel, History Channel, Nickelodeon, Lifetime, TBS...

I don't need, or want hundreds of channels. Why can't they have a pick your own channel cable plan?

What a great Idea Jen...But unfortunately, they probably make their money by charging us for 345 channels that we never watch. If we only chose the actual 10 channels that we watch..they wouldn't be able to charge us $100 a months for their services

The notion of "cafeteria" cable has been floated in several markets. It simply isn't cost-effective. It would require expensive equipment and you'd wind up paying more.

lol i said the same jen 10 years ago,
but from what i was told(not that i beleave this) is that to enable you to pick and choose the channels you want would cost more money then doing them a groups..

here, i need to get another cooking channel , golf channel, some other ethic channel all to get just the wings channel(lot of flying stuff)

oops i should hit refreash before i answer lol katl8e already said it.

Directv revisited that possibility again a few months ago, and katl8e is absolutely right, it just isn't cost effective or feasible to separate the channels like that. They woyuld love to find a way to do it, but each channel would cost so much that the bills would be astronomical. I saw the numbers, but I forget what the cost per channel for an average of 20 channels would be.

We have something kind of like that here. We can order a package but substitute a couple channels with other ones that we want instead. Unfortunately we still can't completely customize the package. Maybe someday.

We have that here, you pay for the basic cable and then add channels on with a sliding price scale:
NDS Pick 1 (1 channel)........................................ \t
$2.49**
\t
NDS Pick 5 (5 channels)....................................... \t
$6.99**
\t
NDS Pick 10 (10 channels)................................... \t
$9.99**
\t
NDS Pick 15 (15 channels)................................... \t
$12.99**
\t
NDS Pick 20 (20 channels)................................... \t
$14.99**
\t
NDS Pick 30 (30 channels)................................... \t
$19.99**
\t
NDS Pick All (All Channels).................................. \t
$29.99**

Wow, wish we had something like that here. I pay around $55 a month and rarely use most of the channels. This doesn't include the so-called premium channels.

It doesn't include time shifting which is the reason a lot of people don't use it, but for people who only watch a few channels it is great (and you pay $25 for basic cable before adding on channels so it still adds up)

Oh and it doesn't allow the premium type movie channels etc, just the older ones, it does have leafs TV and Raptors TV etc though so we use it to add on a 5 pack to our package

I like how the cable companies say it just wouldn't be cost effective to do it. It would but it might mean they they don't make as much as they do now!

I mean how hard is it to allow people to get access to a couple of extra channels they want to see? I know when changed packages briefly, they didn't even need to come out, they just did it instantly.

We don't watch much tv, and have the basic cable package, and the only thing we don't get that I really want is Animal Planet. I think we're paying about $25/30 month at the moment, and for the next package with Animal Planet, it's about $55/month! I'm not paying another $30 to watch one channel, but would pay a smaller (less than $10) charge to watch it.
