Stray cats are a sad fact of life around any camp ground, and the one where we camp is no exception. There are always one or two campers who come to spend the summer with an adorable little kitten, only to move on , at the end of the season, leaving the defenseless little fluff-ball to fend for himself.

Toward the end of the summer in 1998 a beautiful little silver tiger cat came to our camp site begging for food. Not much more than a kitten herself, her bulging belly led us to believe that soon there would be little ones for her to feed. At first she kept her distance, taking the food cautiously with a suspicious eye on us. Soon, however, she was rubbing up against us and begging to come into our camper. Having 5 cats of our own, at the time, we chose to just feed her and make an area in our shed where she could safely have her little ones.

When the day finally came for her little ones to be born, she turned up her nose at our shed, broke into a neighbors camper and had her kittens in a paper bag in his living room.

Returning from a trip, that day, we were greeted by our neighbor running toward us carrying a laundry basket filled with those precious little lives...Miss Kitty and four newborn kittens. One look and we knew what we had to do. We had to keep Miss Kitty and the little ones until we could find proper homes for them.

As the days passed we watched those little ones grow strong, and confident. Our fellow campers stopped in, often, to see how they were doing. They spent many hours holding them and playing with them, so that when they were of age they would be very adoptable. During our working hours campers would come into our camper to be sure that all was well and to nuzzle a little kitten. Many times we came home from work and found a shopping bag full of canned cat food, a big bag of cat food, or litter or kitten toys on the deck from campers who had stopped by just to help out. One camper even offered to pay the vet bill when we finally had Miss Kitty spayed.

Of course we kept one kitten, our beautiful black Bear, who is now 4 years old. All the other kittens and Miss Kitty found wonderful homes, and have flourished in them.

I have heard it said that it takes a village to raise a child, and I add that it took a campground full of caring campers to raise this litter of kittens.

Great story Tiggytoes! I read all the stories as they were put up, and I must concur that it had to be a very hard decision for the judges.

Congratulations on the winning essay!!
