With all the recalls I just wanted to ask the masses here what's the best diet food for my cats?

I have three cats that are all between 1-2 years old. I place three bowls full of food to let them graze but now two of them are overweight. The other cat is fine so I've been having a hard time limiting the food when one doesn't need to be on a diet. So anyways, what's everyone's favorite brand of diet?

You need to be careful with diet foods, as some of them do not have proper amounts of Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, which means kitties coats won't look their best and they might get dandruff. I tried my kitties on Innova Lite dry food and within weeks their coats were awful. Needless to say, I returned it.

Right now I am feeding Performatrin Ultra Slim Care with a lot of l-carnitine in it, hopefully I will see some kitty weight loss in a few months. This food also has very good amounts of Omega 6, and 3.

The best way to help kitties diet is to meal feed. Some cats (like my Odo) will eat as long as there is food available. Others (like my Willow) will eat a few bites, wander off, and come back for a few more later. She can graze and maintain her weight--he can't. I feed her dry food in a place that he can't get to it (Mr. Tubby Odo can't jump very high), and he generally gets two meals of canned food each day. He actually lost an ounce as of his last vet visit. The other important aspect of dieting is lots of play to keep them active. Strings, feathers and laser toys are my kitties' favorites.

Free feeding is ok if you measure their food and make sure they don't get more than they need, but meal feeding is better as they will each go to a bowl and you can make sure they all get what they are supposed to.

As far as diet foods, I personally do not recommend them at all. They are usually full of fillers that cats do not use or process properly and as someone above said, tend not to have the essential oils that help keep coats healthy (although some do now).

I recommend you try a grain free dry or feed wet (at least for a portion of their meals) as they use the food better and it is generally healthier for them.

I have 6 cats, with a few that are kibble addicts, and one who will get destructive if his bowl is empty, so the easiest thing for me to do is make sure there is always food available. That doesn't work so well with an over weight cat, like one of mine was. I discovered that California Natural Chicken and Rice has fewer calories and less fat than many of the "lite" foods out there. everyone here loves it, my fat cat lost weight, and everyone is sleek and shiny.
