I posted this in my Foster kittens thread but need a quick answer so I know whether or not to call the vet.

We rewormed all the kittens yesterday (though technically they weren't supposed to get it until Monday, the vet wanted them to get it anyways). Then last night EVERYONE had diarrhea. Prior to this, only 1 had diarrhea. Additionally, one of the older ones (approx. 2.5lbs, so they'll be up for adoption next week) had a little blood in her stool.

Do I need to call the vet or should I wait to see if the diarrhea continues?

Kittens can dehydrate very quickly. You really should get the kitties to the vet. It might also be something in the dewormer you used. If you didn't get the dewormer from the vet I'd be concerned. Young kittens cannot take just any kind of dewormer. Please have her vet checked as soon as you can. In the meantime, try mixing a little canned pumpkin (not the pie filling but the plain pureed pumpkin) in with her food. It should help with the diarrhea.

an ice cube in Iowa...
How young/old are the kittens?

Sounds like the dewormer caused the diarrhea. And yes, diarrhea can be extremely dangerous in young kittens...you will need to keep the babies warm, and hydrated. Feed a bit of canned plain pumpkin, get a bottle of Pedialyte, and a syringe, and alternate forcing water with the syringe, and pedialyte for each kitten...you must force fluids, and keep them warm.

Also, call your vet right away...they really must be seen.

Hi everyone! Sorry I didn't update sooner, FI and I had to go out of town this weekend (kittens were cared for by our experienced friends). To answer a couple of questions:
- yes, it was wormer from the vet, I brought in my log of their weights (taken every night between 8 and 9 pm before their 10 pm wet food feeding (dry food is out all the time, as well as dry food soaked with water/KMR mixture)
- they were due for their second round of wormer today (Monday) but because one of the younger kittens had a little blood in her stool, the vet wanted everyone rewormed early (plus the 2 older ones go up for adoption this week).
- the kittens are currently free fed dry food and get wet food 3-4x a day, the 2 underweight ones still get their wet food mixed with KMR and are fed seperately, the young ones are still to the point where they'll poop within 15-20 min. after a wet food feeding so we get to observe everyone's poop at least twice a day.

Ok, here's the update, Friday night's weighings still looked good, Thunder (the little girl who had a little blood in her stool) has finally reached 1lb., and MC is still gaining, just slowly (which still concerned me b/c he's eating twice as much wet food as the other kittens, and is fine with eating the dry inbetween wet food meals). I went home on my lunch break on Friday to check on them and the diarrhea had gone away. I checked them again Friday before leaving and poop was still solid.

Everyone's good and healthy now! Except poor little MC is still only 13 oz.

Yup, I'm still hopeful for him, he's MUCH more active now! Before, he would only be active for about an hour before each feeding, then he just wanted to be held or nap. Now, after a feeding he'll clean himself and be lazy for about 20-30 min (probably b/c we're not letting him back with the rest of the litter until he eats ALL the wet food/KMR mix we give him) and then he'll start playing with everyone!

As far as everyone's diarrhea, for now I'm chalking it up to just being wormed a little too early.

yeah i would think it was most probably the wormer. They have such sensitive little tummys.

At least you can watch over little one closely and really get an idea of exactly what he is eating and drinking.

Just you wait till he has caught up and is running around like a little nutter. LOL
