I'm looking for a new cat for our house, we have always had a cat but last year ours died of old age. our old cat was not always the friendliest cat(never sitting with me, never letting me pet him and never being around in general) and now we're looking for a new cat.My question is this, are there any cats that are known to be more friendly than others? I know the way a cat is raised must be a large part of it but is there one type of cat that is generally nicer than the others?

If I where you I would go to a cat rescue. We got our two oldest one from a cat rescue and I could of brought 20 extremely friendly cats home. It also has the advantage that the people working there knows them and can tell you which cat are the moste friendly and loving.

Well as you know all cats are very different, but generally one that has been solicialsied as a kitten tends to be more accepting of humans. However that doesnt necessarily mean that a socialised kitten will be a cuddly one
I agree with Malena, the staff at the shelters are just fabulous people and will know the characters of all the cats - maybe you could get a pair

Keep us posted and good luck with your search

Chill- where do you live? I know someone who is looking for a home for their cat. She is definately a lap cat and loves attention.

My siamese mix cat PHX. Is pretty friendly. Actually, I think he's a siamese/dog! He will let anyone pet him, and even rub his tummy. He goes outside with my on a leash and begs at my neighbors door to be let in (we live in condos so their door is like 3 feet from mine) I have heard though that siamese cats will usually just bond with one person. But I think my PHX bonds with anyone! He is so cute, he likes to sleep in bed with me, he sits on the toilet when I take a shower. Heck, if I'm taking a bath he'll sit on the edge of the bath and wait for me to be done. He greets me at the door every time I come home. Siamese cats are very vocal, so when I first got him- he would meow all night because he wanted to play. But we worked on that for a while, and now he only wakes me up about once a week, which he used to wake me up 3-4 times every single night!! WOOHOOO improvement!!

But I also recommend visiting a shelter! They all need good homes
And most of them are very friendly!

I understand Maine Coons are supposed to be a friendly breed but I generally like to pick based on interaction with individuals rather than breed specific. I think the shelter/rescue idea is a fabulous one. I've worked in a rescue before and my favorite part was helping pair potential owners up with the animals we'd rescued. It was great because a good match makes a happy home!

I like the interaction angle. I do believe a cat picks you. If you go to a shelter and take your time looking at the kitties, you'll find one that will pick you and you will know it. Both our kitties are very affectionate with all of us but our domestic cat was definitely not a lap cat. Each kitty will have a different personality so the advice to check with the volunteers/workers at the shelter sounds like a good bet.

wow, thanks for all the input, i live in vancouver canada though and we are also looking for a kitten so thank you for the offer but i have to refuse. This idea of looking in a shelter sounds really good and i love hearing stories about peoples cats and what they do, a cat that sits on the edge of your bathtub must be amazing. thanks again and i'll fill you guys in when i get more details.
