Soon, I'm moving to an acreage so I want to start IDing my cat. RIght now I live in an apartment, so she couldn't escape, she'd have to go through four doors so I never worried about it.

Anyway, I have a bit of a dilemma. I want her to have a safe collar that breaks away if pulled on, but she can take that off. If it doesn't break away, she might choke! So what should I do?

I'm going to get her microchipped. I don't plan on letting her outside except in a cat run, but she may escape and I want to get her back!

I use break away collars and they are all microchipped as well.

There are at least two kinds of break-away collars. One has a clasp that pulls apart with a certain amount of force, and the other uses small pieces of elastic that snap at a certain point. If one doesn't work, you might try the other. Also, how tight the collar is plays a role as well. If it's too loose, they can hook their back foot under it and yank it off.

If your cat has been indoors living in an apartment, why would you suddenly want to let her roam unsupervised OUTSIDE just cause you have the room? Its far more dangers outside then inside. Stray dogs, wild animals, cars, eagles/hawks, poison are a few. Not to mention other stray cats that are infected with FELV, FIP, fleas, ticks, etc.

If you want her to have some outside time, then either train her to a harness/leash and stay out with her. Or build an enclosure she cannot escape from and put in a treehouse or something for her to climb on and leave her there for a few hrs where you can watch her.

IMO I'd not let the cat outside period.

www.ragtimepetcollars.com do a great selection of collars. You can have your cats name and/or numbered enbroidered onto the collar too. They are the breakaway safe type of collars.

Actually, the original poster said he/she'd only let the cat out in a cat run but was concerned that the cat might escape since there were fewer doors blocking her path. I too prefer to keep collars on my indoor cats since it can be so easy for them to slip outside.
