I always thought that when a tortie or calico has red, it always has stripes in it. Sometimes the patches are small, so the stripes can't be easily seen, but they're there.

This is Popcorn

And this is Vegemite

I have always called them calicos but they have stripes in their red patches.

Red almost always has stripes. In order to be a brown/blue/silver patched tabby, you have to have stripes in the brown/blue/silver color AND the red - if its red only its not a patched tabby.

I did have a litter of 3 red rexes - one was classic tabby, one was mackeral tabby and the other was a true red with NO stripes (it had more of a ticked tabby without stripes) - that's rare!

While it is true that almost ALL reds and variations of red has stripes in it or some sort of marking, a true calico should have patches of red and black on a white background.

The CFA standard definition of calico:

CALICO: white with unbrindled patches of black and red. As a preferred minimum, the cat should have white feet, legs, undersides, chest, and muzzle. Less white than this minimum should be penalized proportionately.

I was going to use this picture as a point guess but this cat, owned by a TCSer is on of the better examples:

I have really not yet found the perfect picture of a calico, seriously.

TCS and Kitty color thread withdrawls.. My phone and internet have been out for two days....do I care about the phone? NO! I have been dying to check this thread, LOL

Neet, CatsareBetter and IMP
to your froggy kitty descriptions they have me cracking up!

Tiffany awesome job on the pointed kitties. I still need to research them all. You worked hard for those points!

I love the current calico discussion. I have two right now, and one that was a perfect calico face and a torti back. I always though one needed to take into consideration the size of the patches as well as the amount of white.

These are my girl, have to keep in mind these are wild born barn kitties so no color selction for breed standards

Lola the Load after first tasting Venison and Green Pea wet food. food bliss, LOL. I think she is a pretty good calico, but based on Abymummy description she is flawed due to the patch on her leg/foot and her little mustache

This is Izzy the catalope kitty, who actually seems to have too much white for a calico, but too many spots for a Van pattern. She is Lola's sister

and last but not least my rainbow bridge kitty Lily Belle who has a magnificent calico face, but her patches on her back get small enough that I would call them more Torti like than calico. Sorry, she is upside down, I don't really know how to use my scanner!

I would definately color your cataloupe kitty as a calico!

As for the 100 points to the most creative colour for the kitty frog, I'll get back to you on that!

New pic up soon!

Is it the "brindling" that makes it a tortoiseshell? Fenwick has the white, but her red and black blend together. She has a couple clear "just red" or "just black" spots, but most of them are a big splotchy (but beautiful!) mess.

yes, ideally a tortie will have brindling (mixed) rather then the "spots" of color - so she would be more of a tortie/white. If she had a lot more white on her (back), and the spots were more separated with white, then she would be a calico.
