I guess I'm wondering how many of those 39,000 deaths were actually directly correlated to the melamine found in the recalled food, and how many were typical kidney-failure deaths. I'm not sure how easy it would be to back-track and directly link the two, if enough time has passed.

It's intriguing, and frightening at the same time. It gives me very little faith in the pet food industry, not that I had an enormous amount of in the first place.
