Respiratory Infection....now vomiting?

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this with their kitties. Cleo was sneezing and wheezing a few weeks back, so I took her to the vet. She stayed there for 4 days while we went away (easier for them to give her meds.) She is on antibiotics and antihistamine for either a respiratory infection or possibly allergies to pollen or the dog we dog-sit frequently.

She seemed fine from Tuesday when we got back until yesterday. We are dog-sitting again, so she's not quite her usual self anyway (not a fan of the dog even though it's littler than her!) She threw up a hairball Friday night which I found Saturday morning. She fussed a lot when I tried to give her her pills (wouldn't eat the treats and kept spitting out the pills) and her eyes seemed runny. I left her alone; later on she ate and then promptly threw up the mostly undigested food. I took her food away so her stomch would settle and gave her just a little dry food late last night. She vomited that too. This morning she seems ok, not dehyrdated as far as I can tell from her skin. She is drinking water and has been using the litterbox ok. I tried to hand feed her a few pieces of dry food but she didn't want them.

I figured I wouldn't give her anything till late tonight....but I'm concerned about the throwing up and the fact that I haven't been able to give her her medicine since Friday night. (She hasn't sneezed or seemed to have her respiratory symptoms since yesterday.) Someone suggested I give her rice later to soothe her tummy. Would that be a good idea? Should I take her to the vet tomorrow?

Thanks!

Hi...

The poor girl, sounds like she has a lot going on. I hope she feels better soon.

Yes, I would call the vet tomorrow morning. Keep a close eye on her today and call an emergency vet if necessary.

Antibiotics can cause stomach upset and general digestive problems like diarrhea. Clavamox is especially bad about doing that.

I would hold off on the dry food for now, sounds like she's having trouble with it, with all she has going on. Mild canned food (not fishy, something simple) or plain boiled chicken and rice would be more digestable than dry food.

Hairballs can upset the tummy for a day or two afterwards. I have a cat that isn't right (tummy-wise) for about 48 hrs after a hairball, if that's any comfort.

Thank you! She is on Clavamox, so having that on an empty stomach and getting over a hairball is probably not a good combo! I'm boiling some rice for her now since I don't have any non-fishy wet food. I have to get to Trader Joe's and stock up. She seems ok, very active and running around the dog. I'll definitely give the vet a call tomorrow and see what she says about the meds and tummy upset.

Well, she seemed ok. I tried some plain rice. She sniffed it and then walked away. I got her some canned lamb/rice mix...gave her about a spoonful which she LOVED and then vomited up about 10 minutes later. Poor thing! She's still sitting here purring, seems like she feels ok, but obviously not. We'll go to the vet first thing in the morning!

The vet sounds like a good plan, let us know how it goes. I hope she feels better soon.

It's lonely in my house tonight. Cleo is at the vet. She went this morning, after being back to normal yesterday, she vomited last night and this morning, so we went straight there.

She had bloodwork and is getting fluids. The vet thinks the antibiotics caused the vomiting so she switched her to a new one. She's also getting shots of some kind of medicine for vomiting too. Last time I talked to the vet, she had eaten some babyfood and not vomited. The bloodwork that had come back was all fine; nothing wrong with her kidneys or liver or anything.

She's staying overnight and getting more fluids tomorrow am. I'm supposed to call tomorrow after 9 to see how she is and hopefully she gets to come home tomorrow! I'm going to ask the vet what to feed her. With all the recalls and now with her tummy upset I just don't know what to give her...

Thanks Beandip for your support!

I know it's lonely...but it sounds like she's in good hands. Hopefully she'll be back home soon and back to normal. Let us know.
