My husband just got a new job a month ago. The boss loves him, and is already talking about relocating the company to North Carolina in a few years (to join a small office that is already there). As long as I am out of school and we no longer have to take care of my mother, I'm open to the idea.

So what is the area like? If my husband keeps this job long-term, I have a feeling this is going to happen sooner or later.

So tell me about it! What is cost of living? What kinds of things do the metro areas offer? What universities are in town? Politically, what is the area like? Demographically?

Thanks!

Surely someone out there knows something about this area...
Internet research just isn't adequate, you know? I want some personal opinions/experiences.
Please.

Hmmm, I guess everyone's kinda busy at the moment.

I know very little about the Raleigh/Durham area puurrrsonally, but my husband has visited there several times in recent years. The company he worked for (AIG American General) had(has?) offices there and they sent him out there to work on their communications systems. He really liked it...so different from Texas, maybe that's why.

Sorry I could be of no more help...hopefully someone with true knowledge of the area will post soon!

Thanks! I don't mind if people are busy... I'm just obsessing about it at the moment.
I do know that they have Research Triangle Park there, and it is a hub of technology businesses.

I'm about an hour and a half SW of there!!!!!

It's HOT and humid. Close to the coast, so the threat of flooding from tropical storms is pretty good, and we have LOTS of thunderstorms in the summer. Some tornados too, so your IN life will have prepared you for that!

Raleigh is the State Capital, so lots of business travelers. Home of the State Fair in the fall, which is
(try the deep friend Oreos!) The NC Zoo in Asheboro is close, and the mountains of VA are just an hour away. They probably have stuff like opera and theatre, but the South is not really into that kind of stuff...

Cost of living is high for the state, but we don't have too many urban areas so they all are high to us country folks. HUGE college town: NC State, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, plus a number of private colleges. The population is probably half a million, but it's like the second largest city in NC. We don't like cities apparently.

Not sure what else, but I know Kai Bengals Nial lives a bit closer than me. He would probably be able to fill you in more.

Thanks! That hot and humid weather scares me, though... :p I hate that kind of weather (but it gets that way in summers here too, I suppose. I still hate it.)

I have cousins who just moved their, I may be visiting sometime in the summer for the first time because my sister is going away to a college right by there, Barton College. I love the heat so for me i'd say it's nice.

The city itself is ok, traffic sucks, just like any big city, and the surrounding area is really nice. I lived about 30 miles away from there and enjoyed going there on Sundays to the big flea market at the state fairgrounds. The cost of living was not too bad compared to some places I have lived. A friend of mine bought a gorgeous 2 story, 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath, bonus room, and a wonderful covered back porch, house in Clayton, about 15 miles outside Raleigh, for 98,000. They said in New York, where they moved from, it would have been close to 500,000. I really don't know much about the political scene.
