Well, I'm assuming the cats used in the ocicat breeding program were pedigreed. Duke didn't come with papers, as I got him from a byb. His mom and an older brother were there though. She was a seal point, no tabby markings that I can remember, and the brother was a blue point with no tabby markings. This is the best pic I have of Dukes ghost stripes from somewhere around November maybe:

You can see the bullseye on his side, the barring on his legs and the tabby 'M' on his forehead. He also had the two tabby stripes down his back.

All cats are tabbies? How does that work with say.. like an all white or all black cat, or like with Persians or .. well, gosh, any breed that doesn't have stripes? (Don't mind me, I'm not good with coats/patterns, etc. Just trying to learn more). I would have thought like Siamese or Tonks or .. well, any cat that you see that doesn't have striping wouldn't be classified as a tabby? Oh, and what is a moggie?

I would appreciate if someone would "edumacate" me!

yeah i am gonna start putting money back every month so i can buy another bengal for maggie, I think her coming into a house w/new kittens will keep her busy at least for awhile. *MAYBE*?

Thank you so much for your reply and fun info on begals. It will be a learning expeirience. And i am Excited. i pick maggie up on saturday

I'm beginning to think ALL cats are tabbies in one form or another - thru breeding you can mask the tabby or not. Many of my rex kittens (blacks/black smoke) had faint tabby markings when small.

Ling was born a blue tabby. In the right light you can still see the tabby markings in her black color now.

Cool that you see the classic tabby on Duke

And yes the ones used in ocicats were purebred abys or siamese or american shorthair. Only the silver classic tabby was used - not the mackerals.

Cool, and to bring this convo a little bit back on topic (
) Ares and Dreamers mom is a seal lynx point bengal. Born solid white, like a siamese, her pattern slowly darkened. Her name is Blithe Spirit, and she's in that link I gave earlier, but heres a pic of her with Ares and Dreamer:

And her alone:

So since she's a marble bengal, she's tecnically a classic tabby pointed cat. You can also see a difference in intensity of her pattern. Thats because the last pic was taken a few months before the first two.

The whole thing about bengals and toilet obsessions...in my experience totally true!! we have to keep all lids down on toilets and we keep bathroom doors shut too!! Joey likes following people in to the toilet and watching or attempting to investigate!! Always embarrassing with guests!!! If we didn't close the lid and door he'd be in there!! He also gets in to silly situations with water related things such as getting in with the washing up, peering in the bath to have a look and falling in etc etc. He's not a swimmer but he does love playing with and watching water!

In terms of the tabby thing, my bengals spotty so i can't see the tabby there but i see it in my lilac british shorthair and the cream I had. They are meant to be self but when kittens there are definite stripes that fade with age. Alfie still has some stripes on his tail!

it is embarrassing if they are not cat lovers that come to your house!! Otherwise my only concern is him drinking water with toilet cleaner in it!! Its quite funny really and nice to know its not just mine!!

yeah, we thought it was adorable, this fascination with water.. until Kahn started dropping toys in the toilet and started trying to figure out how to make them *whoosh* around and swirl so he could play with them. Fortunately, we nipped that in the bud. Now he just drops them in the water fountain.

My girl stormy has a good example of a tri-colored marble pattern:

for more info on marble bengals go to my site here:

Here's a good spotted (mostly non-rosetted) pattern:

picture above is my stud Graffiti Art.

And for a rosetted pattern here are a few examples from some of my other cats:

I have had to do away with water bowls and go to water bottles in two locations for the Bengals. The kittens that I have will SIT in the water bowl and splash it out on any cat that gets near. I have had 4 different Bengal kittens do this from different litters. It is amazing. My floors were contantly wet, until I got things designed around the house in the correct way.

I do have an "outside" room for them to use via a cat door. It is a huge screened and latticed room just for them. I have a natural looking water feature out there for them to play in. They will wade through it and splash around - especially the Brambles. They LOVE it out there. The roof lets the sun come through, but it is 98% UV proof, so it helps protect my Peterbalds that also use it. If it is at all possible to have a safe outdoor room like this, I highly recommend it. They love the sun, water, and wind. They spend about 50% of their time out there enjoying it.

Oh, and don't get me started on what happened the first time a Bengal jumped in the shower with me causing a great surprise.

My adult boy Simba still splashes in the water dish. I have had numerous near slip and fall incidents because of the wet kitchen floor. He'll just start splashing the water in all directions, until the water bowl is empty.

Sounds just like mine. I have one 9 week old boy (need to place him) that is full of himself. I swear he would go swimming if he had the chance.
