Yep, you hard me.
I swear that Elliott makes a noise like a dog barking...I told you guys he's an odd little man.

I was putting away laundry in our room today and Elliott was sitting in the window.
It's very warm today so the window was open and he was sitting there catching a breeze through the window screen.
There as a crow sitting on our neighbors roof kicking up a fuss about something or other.
I heard this noise that sounded sort of like a dog barking...that sort of low RUFF they make...it only happend once so I thought maybe someone was walking a dog, then I heard it again and I was looking right at Elliott when I heard it...I could see his sides moving so I know he's the one that was doing it.

He was a stray up until 5 months ago when we brought him in and he LOVED to chase birds.
I was kind of scared that he'd try to claw his way out of the window, but he never made any attempt to do that he just "barked" at it.

I've had cats all my life and none of them have ever made this noise.

Does anyone else have a barking cat, or is Elliott even odder than I think he is

I've heard of a couple other people mention their cats making a barking type noise. On occasion when Sho really gets worked up playing he'll run between rooms. The first time he made that noise he ran in the room, stopped a few feet away from my computer chair and made a short gruff bark/growl noise. He startled me so badly I jumped in my seat.

I know what you mean.
It does kind of startle you when you hear it, because you just don't expect to hear that noise come out of a cat!!

At first I didn't believe it was him making the noise, he's a sweet gentle quiet cat. Guess he has his moments

I actually got up and checked outside to see if there was a stray dog near the house.

You know, if you can teach your Elliott to bark at strangers you'd have the perfect guard cat!

There's not much chance of that, he's a great big pile of mush, he just wants to sit on everyones lap and cuddle!

We call Gracie "Chicken" because sometimes she sort of chirps like a baby chick.

No, but I did have a dog that could not bark! Yep, it was a Basenji, the only breed of dog that cannot bark. And sits around all day cleaning itself like a cat.

Reading this I'm curious if it isnt evolution at work, Wolves never orgianally barked, they just got that way after living with humans for thousends of years, and we got Dogs, maybe the same thing is happening in our housecats. if it is, it would take a long time before a noticeable percentage of them do it.

Or maybe they are falling back to wilder eras before becoming tame, and are using calls that wild African cats may have used.http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/ima...s/confused.gif

She sounds like she's singing back at the bird, that's so cute.

Elliott's wasn't as high pitched as that.
He was making the woof or ruff sound that a dog makes.
He wasn't growling though, it acutally sounded like a dog barking.
He was sitting there and he went "Woof" and then a few seconds later he went "woof woof".
I swear I was sure there was a dog outside and if I hadn't seen his sides moving and walked up next to him and heard the sound come out of him I would have never believed a cat could or would do that.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one with a barking cat.

I don't know why I'm suprised that he "barks", he talks to his litter box too.
Before he gets in he sits in front of it and kind of chirps at it, gets in and does what he needs to do and then when he gets out he turns around, looks at the box and chirps again.

stimpy barks at birds.
nabu chatters.

and raven, well he's silent. he's the confirmed mouser, so i'm extra glad we are indoors only. i have a feeling he could decimate birds with how he reacts to a bird on the deck. one day he ran into the glass patio door!
he came streaking across the living room silent as can be, i didn't hear him until he hit the door.
