If you were rich...what would you build for your cats?

Ever since I was a kid, I've designed houses (just for fun)... and of course, I often fantasize about how I could make a house nice for my kitties.

One of my favorite ideas is a huge, completely enclosed atrium with a greenhouse-type roof and glass walls that slide back to open it to the living areas of the house.

The atrium would have a state-of-the-art hydroponic floor that would support a nice dense carpet of grass. There'd be a little waterfall and a stream with an arched stone bridge like the famous one on the Old Course at St. Andrew's in Scotland, and of course lots of trees and flowering bushes... and a nice sloping lawn area where you could just lie down and sleep in the grass.

I figure the cats would enjoy that... and so would I!

So if you were building or renovating a house, what would you put in for your kitties?

That sounds like a great idea! If we had the $$ we would do something like that. Until that day we are going to build an outdoor cat enclosure in our backyard.

Sounds like my dream house! Seriously, I would love a big conservatory/atrium where I could grow lots of plants and have a wee pond and let the cats laze about in the sun all day.

And in my dream house we'll have ledges where the cats can run up to each level and sneak through holes in the wall to go into different rooms.

Ooooh! Levels! I like it! You could even arrange it so some of the trees in the atrium serve as routes up to the perches!

I also have a plan for an automatic litter-loader -- you just dump the giant sacks of litter into a chute in the garage, and it's hydraulically lifted up into a holding tank, from which gravity allows it to flow down through a convenient filler hose that dangles above the row of six or eight or -- oh, why not -- TEN Litter Robots in the kitty room.

And of course, the Litter Robots have all been modified so the used litter is dumped into a large subterranean vacuum-tube and whooshed away into an automatic bagging device that deposits the bags directly into the trash cans through an electronic hatch in the outside wall.

Ah, yes, it's all been carefully planned... all I need to do is win the lottery...

It would be in the country, with huge windows, lots of room inside to run, vaulted ceilings to put in high cat towers, enclosed porches on both the front and back doors, drop ceilings to hide in, basically I think I'd make it sort of like the cat house that you see on tv once in awhile, with the cuts in the walls so that the cats can go room to room, things like that.

Yes, that's a great house -- there's a whole website about it! It's just wonderful, although the owners say one of their cats fell and broke a leg once. I think I'd want to carpet the catwalks to help them get some traction.

I love the screened porches, that's a wonderful idea!

Silly owners, why wouldn't you put some sort of traction on the catwalks for your kitties? I'd have to have think carpet on the floors also just because of that worry. I don't want my kitties to get hurt, just to have a house that's mostly theirs.

Like you, I would build a giant enclosure that would allow them to enjoy sun, grass and plants to their hearts content. It would have levels for them to climb, jump, and play on.

*sigh*

Ooh, if I won the lottery, I would buy a massive house in the country, and have a sanctuary for oldies, it would be at least 4 bedded, we would have isolation rooms so I could continue to foster, I might have a couple of outdoor pens to have a small cattery to bring in some funds, and there would be two really big runs in the garden, and one would be linked to the house through some kind of tunnel. I would also have a massive attic that would be purely for them, it would have radiator beds, normal beds, a human bed, a sofa, some catwalks and loads of stuff!!
