I believe that the Romans actually DID crucify people naked. The loincloth, like the long hair, was added by Renaissance artists, to fit the popular conceptions and sensibilities of the time.
In most Western art, Jesus is portrayed as a tall, fair-skinned, blue-eyed man with long hair. In actuality, to blend in with the Jewish population of that time, he would have probably been no more than 5' 6", swarthy-skinned, with dark hair and eyes. As an observant Jew, he would have had a beard, short hair and payos
(side curls). Only men who had taken the Nazarite vow (a la
Samson) would have had long hair.
