My mom's cat was on steriods for 6-8 months & about 4 months after the medication he has gotten really really fat. What are the long term effects of this drug? She is planning on bringing him to the vet soon b/c his fur is matted and he is drinking more water lately. Would love to hear what you think.

Diabetes is most common & would account for being fat & drinking a lot of water. The sooner she gets him to the vet, the better!

That's what I told her. This poor kitty has been through a lot in the past year. He was on the steroids b/c he had an infection in the mouth that spread down his throat. He couldn't eat or drink anything for months. They had him on so many antibiotics and nothing was working. He was on a combination of steroids, antibiotics & one more drug. He had a tooth pulled before this happened and we think he had an infection that went unnoticed by the vet. He went from 14 lbs to 5 lbs from not eating & is well over 14lbs now. I really hope it isn't diabetes but I can't think of anything else.

The side effect of steroids is bloating and increased thirst..I had a dog that was on steroids all of her life and the only long term effect from it was, the vet told me it may reduce her life span by 6 months but that was about all is what he told me..I felt it was more about her quality than quantity of life..she lived to be almost 15 yrs. old...

Actually it was increased with time. I think it was supposed to last a month but he was getting them every two weeks for awhile. Not sure of all the details. It was a crazy time. We thought he would have to be PTS. The vet was baffled on why he wouldn't heal. They actually sent a biospy to Uni of Penn & even they were confused with the infection. Overtime he just healed.
