I really enjoyed Susie's trivia game but now that she's taking the weekend off, I thought I'd start one up to keep us going til Monday...or whenever

Its very easy. I'll start by posting random lyrics to a song I know. Whoever is first to guess the name of the song correctly, gets to post a new set of lyrics. If you know the artist, you can post that as well but its not necessary to win that round...just the name of the song. Sound ok to y'all? Ok then, let's start. Oh yeah, it can be any genre of music...modern...oldies...whatever! If y'all are having a hard time with the lyric, then the poster can give hints as well.

Here are the first set:

All he wanted
Was to be free
And that's the way
It turned out to be
Flow river flow
Let your waters wash down
Take me from this road
To some other town

Ok y'all...good luck!

Ok, here's my set of lyrics ...

... Now we sat there for an hour or two
Just eatin' that Gospel pie
When around the bend come a terrible wind
And lightning lit the sky
He said so long son I gotta run
Appreciate you listening to me
And I believe I heard him sing these words
As he skipped out across the sea ...

Dangit, I know this, I know I know this

The singer was a folk singer in the day.

Why can't I come up with a name and title?

I think I'm fairly safe in assuming that was right, so, try these on:
Probably a pretty easy one.

Heard about the old time sailer men,
They ate the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn

Nope

Hints, another folk singer/writer, still pumping out hits.
Biggest hit song was in 1977 (not this song though )

Jimmy Buffett, "Cheeseburger in Paradise"?

OK......let me dig something up here....

And the days go by....
like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own...
I begin again
Said to my friend, baby...
Nothin' else mattered

Wait a minute -- did you actually use the words "folk singer" and "hits" in the same sentence? Folk singers don't have hits!
Once in awhile they have a record that doesn't actually lose money, but that's about it...

(I say that as a huge lifelong fan of folk music.)

Okay... 1977... is that too late for "City of New Orleans?" Written by Steve Goodman and recorded by Arlo Guthrie... and since Steve Goodman passed away years ago, that leaves Arlo as my next guess. (But those lyrics don't sound like Arlo to me!)

By the way, I knew a great big bruiser of an ol' orange tabby named Arlo, one of three cats in the household of my best friends. He crossed the bridge earlier this year. Arlo was one of those cats who expressed his affection by headbutting you so hard you'd fall over sideways.

Oops! I see I'm too late, and wrong besides! Sorry!

I'm assuming I'm right (actually I know I am), so here goes:

For you (whose eyes were opened wide whilst mine refused to see)
I'm sore in need of saving grace. Be kind and humour me
I'm lost amidst a sea of wheat
where people speak but seldom meet
And grief and laughter, strange but true
Although they die, they seldom cry
