My kitten is just about a year old, and three times now over the last two weeks he has thrown up overnight. For months before this, he was fine. I feed him Authority chunks and gravy wet and Authority dry about 50/50. I did switch him from the kitten dry to adult dry about a month ago, but it didn't start until well after that. The thing that puzzles me is that his behaviour otherwise, is totally normal. He still wants to play, goes to the bathroom normally... I have noticed a very slight decrease in appetite, but I thought that may have been because he was nearing a year of age. I have noticed a bit of hair too a couple times, and thought maybe it was a hairball problem, but he doesn't have real long hair, and I thought that was usually a problem with older cats?

Thank you for any insight.

Hi...

Umm, not to scare you but some (or was it all?) of the Authority chunks and gravy food was part of the recent recall...still going on actually. I would personally avoid the recalled brands. If he likes chunky wet food, your best option might be something like Meow Mix pouches at the moment...they actually have reasonably good ingredients and are not part of the recall.

The best thing to do would be to talk to the vet.

The only other suggestion I can make is to remove the food overnight if you haven't already. That helped me in a similar situation in the past. But do call the vet and explain it to him/her the way you described it here.

Good luck...I hope kitty gets to feeling better soon.

I think I'll take the food back to the store, as someone else told me they also thought it was on the recall list. Is there anywhere online that shows all the recalled food? It's a pain to find any decent wet food for him because he only eats the chunks and gravy kind, he doesn't like the loaf/pate kind.

It looks like Authority is on the recall list. You may want to take kitty to the vet to get checked out.

Yeah, I booked an appointment with the vet for tomorrow afternoon. I found the list online and printed out the date codes of the foods affected, but I am at work and can't check right now.

I am just kind of worried now, obviously I was unaware of this and I hope it didn't hurt Bailey long term. For now, I just want to find something I can use in the meantime, maybe the store has the same brand without the same date codes that will be ok, but I won't know until I can go up there after work.

What could be wrong with my cat? Kidney problems... or?

They still aren't sure of the real problem with the recalled foods...so I personally don't trust them to know the correct dates for "affected" batches.

I would pick out something different. Some are avoiding all foods made MENU foods altogether, but personally in my situation that's very hard to do. Menu foods makes nearly all (95%) of the canned cat food in the US. It's a personal choice. ...but I would definitely avoid the ones on the list at the very least.

I know it's tough, but I would pick out a different food.

If all you've seen is 3 isolated vomiting incidents...I would not panic...but you are doing the right thing getting him checked. Cats can vomit if you look at them wrong. But yes, the recalled foods have been causing kidney damage / failure in cats and some dogs. The major symptoms are vomiting, lethargy, and changes in urination amounts. I'm just glad you found out so you can get him checked out.
