My cat needs to gain weight, I took him to the vet and he is only 8lbs. The vert said he needs to put weight on but didn't say how he should do this or how quickly. Right now I have started feeding him some soft food once a day and I am thinking maybe of changing that to twice. I am afraid that he will put the weight on too quickly and make him sick. Does anyone know if he will get sick if he gains too quickly or should he be ok? Help please

CALL your vet back and ask...\\

there are extra calorie supplements but you need to get an idea of what the vet thinks is best for you cat

I know that his teeth are kinda bad and i thought that may be it.
The vet didn't say really, just that on the body type scale that he is around a 2 and that he needs to put on some weight. I have noticed that since I have started feeding him canned food along with his hard stuff that he seems to be eating the soft food up really well. I am thinking of calling and asking the vet how he thinks i should put the weight on, how much he thinks he needs to gain and how quickly he should gain it. Right now he is only 8lbs, i think he should be probably 10 but i don't know myself really. I don't want him to gain the weight too quickly and get sick but i don't want him to skinny and them thinking I don't love him or take care of him. *sigh* i don't know what to do really. Right now I give Adonis a can of 9 lives soft food everyday, I am thinking of making that 2 cans a day, like 1 in the morning and one at night but i don't know if he will gain the weight too fast that way and if that would be bad. I have even considered giving him some hard kitten food mixed in with the canned stuff but i don't know if this will make him gain too much weight or too fast. I don't know really.

I am having this problem with Ellie, who has always been thin but has lost weight over the last 6 months or so, though no vet can find a cause, despite blood tests etc. She went down to 3 kilos, under 7 pounds.

My vet now has her on a sachet of Royal Canin convalescent food a day, which she loves. It is high calorie but in fact she is actually eating less as I give her half inthe morning and half at night. In between I have switched her to dry kitten food, the same as I give Biscotte. So her bulk of food hasn't changed, it is just better, and after three weeks she is slowly gaining. She has only vomited once in that time, something she has always been prone to. You need to ask your vet for a diet regime for Adonis, switch him slowly and give him several small meals per day.
