OMG, I was coming in from work, and as long as it took for the screen door to close...I turned around and she was standing outside and the door had shut

I have never felt such panic before, but knew I had to stay calm or she would freak out...Thankfully, she was very nervous being outside so she just stood there long enough for me to grab her...

Man, I have never felt so scared

This sucks, now she has the itch to go outside..I will have to put a collar on her for sure..I am so freaked out, I live on a really busy street too

I am glad you got her back inside safely!

My 2 have never been outside, I am in an upstairs flat with an internal front door and a security door at the bottom, but still the thought of either of them making it to the great outdoors terrifies me. I have actually considered harness training them (they are both gentle and easy to handle so I can't imagine it would be too difficult for mine, Trout may be a different matter with her tortitude!) just to walk them in the near vicinity around the door so that they would have a better chance of finding their way home in the event of escape.

You did absolutely the right thing by staying calm, freaking out would have scared her more for sure, and maybe had her running to hide.

If I were you, and she has got a taste for running for the door, I would keep a couple of cans with stones in - one each side of the door - and rattle one before you open the door to go in or out, hopefully the rattling noise would deter her from coming near the door.

I am so glad you got her back ok, the last thing I would ever want to see is a thread where you are distraught cos she's run off

They can be very fast, can't they? hehe

Sometimes Chynna gets a hankering to run away from home and when I open the apartment door she makes a mad dash into the hall. She stops in surprise because the hallway isn't exactly "outside". She either stands there and I pick her up and put her back into the apartment, or I herd her back and she walks in by herself. Goofy kitty.

You'll have to make it a habit to take Trout out a few times a day on her harness so that she can get some playtime.

I've been there before too -it can definitely be frightening. All of my furbabies are indoors only. Velvet has got loose several times by running out the door when we're walking in. I'm soo scared she'll get loose that i've taught her to walk on a leash/harness and trained her to sit by the door to go outside for a walk instead of run out- that seems to have worked. I also have her collar on her with id tags and her rabies tags. I will be having ALL of them chipped before they move into Colins house. (in the next week or two
) Is Trout chipped? It might be a good idea to have that done if you haven't already.
I'm glad you were able to catch her

Jacob loves to door-dash, but Löki is petrified at the thought! With Jakie it's a game - he wants me to chase him!
If I don't he comes back to find out why!

I wonder how much chipping costs? I am more worried about her getting hit by a car..I can't imagine that..I would just die if that happened to her

That's so scary, Sibohan used to run for the door but has stoped since we now live in an apartment if she gets into the hall all I have to do is corner her. I hope Trout dosn't do it again.

In Ottawa the Humane society has a microchip clinic and it is $43 a pet with a 10% discount for multiple cats. You might want to check the local clinic and see if they might have a cheep day coming up

of course the chip won't pervent the car from hitting her but if she does get lost I think it's worth it.

It is very frightening when they get outside. Right after we got Carly, DH was outside with someone to get an estimate on painting the house. I was going out to join them when I saw this cat running up toward the door. I was thinking it looked like Carly - sure enough it was. I'm so glad she came home.

When Petunia (RIP) got out, I ended up ringing the doorbell. She ran right back in.

Oh no naughty Trout!!!! Don't scare your meowmy like that!

I know with Smudge and Stumpy if they got out they wouldn't go far, and we're in the middle of our complex and wouldn't go far, but if Lily ever got out, I know we would never get her back, she's just too much of a fraidy cat and would never come near us.

I'm so pleased Trout didn't run!

that is so scarey. nabu did that a couple times when he was younger. one of the times we lived in anaheim california, on a super busy road. i think i about had a heart attack! i'm so glad you caught trout.

now we live in a 3rd floor apartment, and it opens to a hallway. i'm pretty sure the cats think it's a room we won't let them into.
