Pee in the Corner

About once or twice a week, one of my cats leaves me a little present in the form of a puddle in the front bedroom. Although I have not seen who my little faucet is, I am betting that it is Gracie. We keep a very clean litter box, scooping two to three times daily. I also change out the sand about every 10 days. The pee has a strong smell to it.

Stats: Both are three years old. Gracie is a DMH, George is a DSH. Both are fixed. Neither are exhibiting signs of a urinary tract infection such as excessive genital licking, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

NavDoc

I suppose even though they appear to be in good health, a vet visit might be an idea just to rule out any medical problems (especially if this is a newish behavior).

NavDoc, just out of interest, what product are you using to clean up the pee? I had an issue with one of my cats peeing on carpet in our old house -- she did not stop 'marking' the area until I used an enzyme based cleaner to really soak into the carpet (and the pad underneath), and get rid of the urine scent.

Good luck -- hopefully someone with some great advice will come along soon.

Nothing special. I have good quality carpet so the pee never reaches the pad. It stays on top and dries if I do not get to in time. I soak it up with a paper towel, spray a multi-purpose cleaner and rag.

However, you just gave me a thought to ensure that I cleaned it all and deodorized it so perhaps she will not pee there again.

I ahve a cat that does this too I don't know why she does it but it is very frustrating. She also poops on the carpet in one place sometimes but we have figured out that she does that only when we forget about changing the litterboxes or she wants new litter or she is ready for them to be totally changed and washed out and everything so we can prevent her from pooping now. She still pees in the corner however I would love to know why!!!!

Unfortunately, all purpose cleaners usually don't do it. You'll need something with an enzymatic action to break down the fatty molecules that carry the scent. Ammonia is a great fat dissolver and a component of most all purpose cleaners, but it's also a major component of cat pee...so, I would get a good enzyme cleaner like "Nature's Miracle" (without any ammonia), let it soak in for several minues and blot it up. I bet she's picking up on a latent scent and re-marking the area.

I have a long haired cat that tends to have a wet bottom at times. He'll sit down on the linoleum a few feet from the box and leave a damp spot while he's cleaning himself. If I don't get it with the spray and let the cleaner soak long enough, they'll both be back sniffing the area for days after and this is on a bare floor.
