Recently Twinkie started scratching the carpet again so I moved his favorite scratching post over the spot he scratched -- the middle of the living room, natch -- which solved that problem. But Mellie decided the location of the new post was purrrfect for surveying her realm. Here, Rocket makes obeisance to the exalted lady:

"Look upon thy loyal subject with favor, oh my gracious sovereign!!"

No such luck.

Great pics, Tim! Mellie doesn't look like she wants to give up her throne.

BTW, where did you get that scratching post? I need to get one, but the ones I'm seeing locally are a) too short and b) very unstable.

Heidi -- it's this one from Dr.s Foster & Smith (ha ha --- I didn't notice it before, but that looks like Twinkie in their catalog!!
)

But as delivered, I found it to be inadequate for two reasons: the base is too small -- making it too tippy, and the top is too small (and it's smooth) -- so kitties can't easily jump up and perch on top. As you can see from comparing to the catalog picture, I enlarged both the base and the top, and added carpet to the top.

At least it's tall enough for almost all cats, if you're handy enough to remedy the defects.
