Can someone please tell me how I can open pictures - the ones that are just an X. When I click on the X, nothing happens. When I right-click on it and select Show Pictures, again nothing happens.

If you are seeing a lot of red X's, there is a good chance that the Photo hosting sites are being blocked. This happens to quite a few people that log in from work.
For example, can you see my signature? It is hosted by Photobucket.

Yes, I can see your signature - and I'm at home. This not only happens on this site, but on other occasions also. I have never been able to open any picture that is accessed by an X.
Could it be that you have one of the photo hosting sites blocked in the security section of your browser?
firefox and its add-ons etc may also block images if the security level is set high enough
