CLARIFICATION

I just talked to a very nice Natura costumer service rep....
In my panic yesterday, I must have misunderstood what I was told.

Today she said that, although they use a factory owned by Menu Foods, the one that they use is in North Dakota and was not involved with the recalled food.

She assured me that they buy and test all of their own food.

Bottom line....
Nutura does not buy food from Menu Foods.
It looks like all of their food, including Innova and Evo is safe.

Sheba, at least the "chicken breast" variety, only has four ingredients: Chicken Breast, water, guar gum, and something else that was not wheat gluten. This variety of Fancy Feast, in any case, should be safe. I have not seen Sheba on the list anywhere.

Meow Mix is their own company and manufactures Meow Mix foods, and Alley Cat. There was nothing on their website about the recall when I checked it yesterday. Several of their little plastic tubs of food contain wheat gluten, but from what I've seen, their packet foods have several varieties that do not contain wheat gluten. The word from my vet is any food that is not on the recall list is safe (but this was pertaining to Meow Mix, when I was speaking to him). I think, even though I trust my vet, that I will be looking for non-gluten foods, just to be sure.

Look on the can of Meow Mix to see who packages it. We use nine lives and they packaged by Delmonte(yep, some company that has peas and pineapples

I stick to 9 lives until the fur settles on the other brands.

Natural Life (carried by WalMart and others) is also manufactured by Menu, although it is not part of the recall (per rep).

Either way....that's not good news.

She said that no food produced by Natura (including Innova) is from Menu Foods.
Because of that I purchased Innova Lt yesterday.
See my above post.

Who can we believe if the companies themselves, even those with good reputations, don't give us accurate information?
The rep I spoke to (who I just called back again) said Innova, Evo and the other foods I quoted yesterday are not made by menufoods, although their website says that they are not 'cuts and gravy style and not affected by the recall

Foods that contain "gums" (guar gum, acacia {gum arabic}, xanath gum), or thickeners, such as carrageenan (a seaweed also known as Irish Moss) are not ideal ingredients in pet food.

Gums have been documented to enhance the activity of lectins.

I am not sure what the problem is, but I'm fairly certain that the pet food companies know what the issue is, and simply aren't sharing it until they do a lot of damage control and CYA. They're going to present in the best possible light (granted, there isn't truly a good light here), but the best one in order to not lose all of their business, or the best marketing they can pull off.

For the tiny bit of wet that Noel is getting right now, she'll be getting Meow Mix, and only enough to mix in with her anitbiotics.

I guess I trust the companies, mostly, to tell us which one is or isn't affected.. because I think it would cost them way too much money if they were to lie about it, and given that the "facts" are out there.. it would be too difficult to hide it, perhaps. I just don't know that I expect them ultimately to tell us the truth about what the problem is. They will, I'm sure, attempt to dodge as much of the bullet as they can. Something of this scale could very easily bankrupt them.

None of the Fancy Feast are recalled - they are made by Purina and are not made for them by Menu Foods.

Do you have a list of companies that own their own plants?
That could be really useful.
Some major companies own dry food plants and let us believe they also owned their wet food plants too.
We now know that is not the case.
Innova uses a Menu Foods Plant that was not involved in the recall but....
when I ask the customer service rep about cross contamination she just gulped and said I sure hope not.

Transitioning my kitties off of Nutro Pouchs is hard...
Their tummys are already upset.
I need a list of wet food that is safe.
I guess that would be companies that own their wet food plants.

Tell me this is a dream and we will all wake up soon.

Thanks
To confuse people more, after seeing a post in the main recall thread I called Natura again and got this answer

http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...&postcount=456

None of their food is made in Canada, they do SHARE a facility in North Dakota in which menufoods and another company who she did not name also work from.

Additionally, the North Dakota plant of Menu Foods has its own suppliers and is not part of the recall so there is also no risk of cross contamination.

(I called twice and got the same answer so I assume this is somewhat more accurate than the information we had earlier)

I sent a load of emails off and have a reply

Fromm products are NOT affected by the Menu can pet food recall

In regards to the recent recall of canned pet foods, Fromm Family Foods want to re-assure all of our existing customers and any customer considering a Four-Star product that all of our canned dog and cat foods are produced WITHOUT the use of any binders such as wheat gluten, and are not made by Menu Foods who has been a major supplier to to pet trade for many years. While we feel this is a major issue concerning the entire industry, no one manufacturer can underestimate the magnitude of issues like these, which is why we are doing our part to communicate what is in our products to our distributors, retailers, and customers. As such, we feel it is more important than ever to insist on producing our canned products using only the finest ingredients made in facilities fit for human consumption. We have based our entire manufacturing process on fibrous muscle meat production and the use of fresh vegetables combined in a Grain Free formulation.

* Key Points Fromm Four-Star cans are NOT made by Menu Foods
* Four-Star cans are produced in a human food plant without the use of wheat gluten or other grains
* All Four-Star cans are made with 100% pure meat, duck, chicken and fish, NOT reformed meat
* Fromm Family Foods does not use any by-products in our dog and cat foods
* Fromm Family Foods does not test on animals
* Fromm products are all-natural. Products made with binders to make reformed meat and products which use wheat gluten are NOT considered all-natural by our standards

We sincerely regret this has affected so many of us in both the pet food industry and especially the pet owners themselves who have experienced this directly.
It is basically copied from the announcement they now have on their website

I had never hear of Fromm Family food before...
We have a store in a nearby town that might carry it.
Thanks

We should start a thread listing companies that own their wet food factories.

My boys are not huge fans, but they are fussy at the best of times. Our vet recommended the food for Scully as it has glucosamine and he has a lot of weight on his older bones.

The one mine did try was the shredded chicken entree (it looks edible too - I prefer them to eat something I would eat - or at least think about eating without throwing up)
