I was looking at cats on petfinder.com yesterday and there seemed to be a LOT of cats up for adoption just in our area (Alberta, Canada). I became curious and added up all the cats up for adoption in North America on petfinder.com ... I should have left things alone ... approximately 106,000. I believe that would be Canada and the United States together.

Jonesie....actually, that is only a fraction of the numbers as many shelters still do not have Petfinder accounts and many more do not post ALL their cats for adoption.

It is mind boggling. Since I recently started breeding Devon Rex, I was feeling guilty about adding even more cats to this world. Fortunately, there are not so many of the more rare purebreds in shelters.

I will be making sure that any of my kittens go to their new home neutred/spayed!!!

Check to see if you can arrange to have them spayed/neutered ahead of time.

As to the comment about not seeing many purebreds in shelters...I wouldn't go by Petfinder to determine numbers, the vast majority of shelters do not have websites and as such, there is no way to know exactly how many purebreds are actually PTS every year.

the numbers are staggering, and like Katie said, petfinder only has a fraction of the true number of homeless animals, the stats are that millions of pets are put to sleep every year
