I've been thinking about trying to transition my kitties to a raw diet and this pet food recall has sped up my decision.

Does anyone know if the raw frozen medallions are the same for cats and dogs? I just got off the phone with a local store asking if they carried it for cats and he told me it was the same food for either cats or digs. I always thought the cat formula was different because of the taurine?

You're right about the Taurine ...and the other difference between the usual "cat" or "dog" food is Protein % (higher for cats). There might be more, I'm not sure. Those are the significant ones though.

I'm not an expert, but...It's my understanding that a lot of Taurine is lost in the cooking process, so generally regular cat food is supplemented with the needed Taurine. Raw meat, especially the muscle meats, are rich in Taurine.

They can call it "cat and dog" because it meets the needs of a cat, since it has the needed amounts for a cat for Protein and various amino acids like Taurine. Basically it has what a cat needs and more than a dog needs...that's my understanding anyway.

Maybe someone else can add more or word it better than I did.

My cats prefer the Chicken/Turkey Nature's Variety...over the other meats.

Thanks for the quick replies. So, I can buy the Nature's variety raw and it's meant for both dogs and cats?

I live in the highland village area in saint paul and Chuck and dons petfood outlet is the ony place that carries ANY raw diets for cats or dogs.http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/ima...lies/frown.gif
Here is the page to put in your state to find a list of all stores in Minesota carrying this food: when I used it, it came up with a list of 74 stores, but wouldn't let me capture that pages link.

Yes, you are correct!
I hope they enjoy it...it can be a struggle getting them convinced that "raw" is food. I have had a lot of success though! 5 out of 8 will eat it without any bribing or begging on my part
And 2 of the other 3 will accept bribes.

Raw still needs supplements but taurine isnt one of them... and you likely dont need one right a way since NP is a "complete raw " meaning it has meat bones veggies and organs

I feed NVP premade medallions. Beef is the favorite here.
It takes awhile to transition, but it is well worth it.

Panther Pride, I have been told that in your area Chuck & Dons is about the only place to get pre-made raw.

They dont sell the cat one, just the one for dogs at dog days, but they do seel cat food. http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/ima...lies/frown.gif. You are right White cat lover I can get the cat and dog one at Chuck @ dons.

I was wondering about other raw food brands, Primal, ect in my area.http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/ima...s/confused.gif. I already know how to get Natures varity at Chuck and dons, will have to compare prices though. Dont drive so the gas money goes on my pca and is covered by my servives, I will never drive I have legal blindness in my right eye, due to a birth defect of the optic nerves. Primal is a great food...My kitties eat it...They go between Wild Kitty and Primal...I started them on Natures Variety but they were slow taking to it...really slow...I tried Wild Kitty and Primal and things started to take off..
What I really like about Primal are: the organ meat, the veggies/fruits are organic, Taurine and Kelp(supplemented)!!! The NV does not have that(Taurine/kelp)..
Look for the chicken salmon formula they love it

If you could get a hold of wild kitty it is also good food.

Please just remember, folks, not every food is right for every animal, not even raw.

I tried my Yorkshire Terrier on Nature's Variety Raw Medallions and she became quite ill. Over a short seven to eight week period, she lost fur, gained two pounds (she only weighed five to begin with), developed sores and joint pain and became depressed. It took nearly four months to return her to health (she's now on Royal Canin dry and Innova Senior wet and doing great).

We all want the very best for our beloved furkids and with this awful food scare, many are rethinking their feeding strategy. I'm not against raw food by any means, I just want to remind folks to be careful while they're changing their furkids' diets. I was so sure that raw was the "holy grail" of food (so to speak) that I waited a good bit longer than I otherwise would have to recognize it as the cause of Jaz's problems.

My switch had nothing to do with the food scare and everything to do with the need for healthy animals...My dog had some health concerns and has been eating raw for about 6 months and hasn't been to the vet since
normally he would go every other week!!! For my kitties, Cyclopes got a UTI which is mostly attributed to developing crystals(dry food) and both of them(2 kitties) made the switch 4 weeks ago and WOW!!!
I disagree I do think it is the "holy grail" of food for us!!! They have been shedding less and their coat is beautiful which is a good sign...There pooh is not stinky and they look foward to every meal...I love that the ingredients in raw are so simple and beneficial to what their true diet is suppose to be.

NOPE... it is actually how much the dog trusts the one feeding it ...

Raw has a learning curve like all feeding... with mine simple meat organs bone was the way to go ....
