We gave Blackie 4 cat treats (Whiskas Temptations) everyday for a week and then he started getting diarrhea! It wasn't severe, but it was much softer and he was pooping much more often within a day. Naturally we stopped the treats and didn't give him food for a day (we did have water available but he didn't seem to drink as much as he normally did). When we gave him food again, he didn't eat as much as he regularly did but that was probably a good thing. Anyway, he poop became solid again and he started to eat his normal amount. A couple of days later his poop became much softer again and pooping much more often again even though we haven't given him any more treats at all! We'd appreciate some advise, thank you!

Could he be getting into something? How is your water? Maybe something is causing him stress? Just a few ideas...Maia has gotten diarrhea from stress before, we had a dog visit, and even though she seemed fine and there were no problems, it got to her. I felt bad

see if he will eat a little bit of pure canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filler). Or else a little plain or vanilla yogurt. Pumpkin is better but I have yet to find a cat who will voluntarily eat it! Mix it with his wet food. By a little bit I mean like a teaspoon.

There haven't been any changes in our lifestyle or Blackie's, so it doesn't seem to be from stress. He seems normal otherwise, like he'll hang out at his favorite window, chase balls around, etc., so I'm pretty sure it's those darn cat treats -- he must have a sensitive stomach that doesn't tolerate changes in his diet, I guess.

And about the canned pumpkin, I did see that recommended in other websites, but I'm confused -- I thought that's what you give cats when they're constipated!

I hesitate to use yogurt or acidophillus cuz he's a feral cat, so he doesn't want us going near him, meaning I'd have to leave the yogurt on his food for who knows how long till he comes around to his bowl whenever he's hungry, and that kind of stuff needs to be kept refrigerated.

Slippery elm was also recommended in other websites, so I bought some today and put it in his water. We'll see what happens.

So the slippery elm finally worked!!! It took a whole day before we started to see some kind of result -- after 24 hours of him drinking water with slippery elm mixed in, his pooping frequency decreased but the poop still seemed soft. Today was the second day of the slippery elm treatment and he pooped only once and it was solid, back to normal!! Slippery elm is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now think that Blackie has no tolerance for corn, which was a key ingredient to those treats I was giving him. I heard from a guy who works at the pet store I buy Evo from that corn seems to stay in their system for some time even if they're not eating any more of it. I'll be much more careful as to what type of treats to give him!
