Try this out on your cat - concerned cat when human pants

Ok, i'll admit this is weird....

But in short, one time I was playing with my cat, Ocean, and started panting like a dog (I did, not my cat), and i noticed that she became really concerned about my panting and ran over to me to investigate. Ive tried it several times since then, and its the same everytime, she'll drop what she's doing and run over to see whats going on. I even had one of my friends try it (who Ocean isnt fond of) and she ran ove to him too.

Has anyone ever heard of this?! It's really wild. Try it with you cat, and see if it works.

I'm thinking they may think your under stress, or hurt or something, since it sounds like these are times when they pant.

OMG!! That is wild, I just tried it and Trout flipped out!!

She ran over to me and was all cautious and jumped up on my lap and stared at me

That is too funny, usually she doesn't give a damn when I am sad or anything..apparently I need to pant to get her attention.

Cool experiment...although I did feel like a wang as I was panting.

LOL - so weird!

I wonder if anyone else has come across this. I try not to do it to Ocean much, beceause I feel like I'm "calling wolf" for some reason.

Anyways, I'm glad you tried it out and it worked for you - enjoy...er something

Ok, this is the thread I get to share my story. LOL

I was making funny sounds and started making hissing sounds and Taylor got soooooooooooo worked up. He puffed up all his fur! His tails was sooo pooofy. I admit it is probably a little mean, but it was so funny and cute to see him get spooked like that.

I don't think he hates me for it though. He's curled up in a ball between my legs.

Petunia jumped OFF of my lap.......but she stared at me and stopped purring when she jumped down! Very weird!

I'm sure he still loves you !

The hissing I can kind of understand, since he may think you're mad at him or going to attack - still though, funny story I love when their tails puff up.

Thanks for trying/sharing

Well, the hissing thing was something that happened a while ago. I was just playing with my kitties and the next thing I know it, I'm making hissing sounds.

I wasn't clear about that. I did try the panting thing and posted the results of that. What a great experiment!

I just went and panted at the cats while they were sitting on my parents' bed. Squee just looked at me but Scratch looked very alarmed and panicked so I reassured her that I was alright.

Got it.

The fact that you started making hissing sounds makes me feel better about the fact that I suddenly started panting like a dog!

Maybe we should start a thread about how animals can make humans act like other animals! LOL

LOL - Hey! I'm just a good cat daddy. I swear I'm not crazy!

Just tried this with Seb. He watched me for about 30 seconds, then slowly moved toward me. Then sat at my feet just watching me. He didn't look overly concerned, just watchful. This is too funny! Will have to try other things now - poor Seb!

Limerick just looked at me. No big reaction from him.

I've noticed it works best if you get your tounge moving - silly... I know.

One panicked (but his own tail startles him sometimes).
The rest just looked at me like I was stupid (and I admit, I do feel rather silly).
My cats live with a dog though, so they're used to stupidity around here.

I tried w/ Bayley and he just looked at me like I was dumb and licked my face

Rocket rubs on me when I do that, but he does that when I do practically anything.
Neffie looked at me like I was from outer space and wouldn't come within 5 feet of me.
The others were out on the porch and I wasn't about to go out there and make a fool of myself (more so then I already had! LOL!) so I don't know how they would react.

Oscar looked at me at first then took off and looked at me from a distance His face was priceless!

I have had times where I was coughing really bad and gasping and Sho would come over to check on me. I think it's just any unusual or alarming noise coming from us upsets them a bit.

All three of the girls' eyes got real big and their tails poofed up. Then they all started backing away...it was pretty amusing.

Poor finnegan was sitting on my lap and i started panting he looked at me all wide eyed and ran away from me!

I have never tried this and Misty is sleeping right now but I will try it and post back at a later date...you have me curious now.

Some other silly things are walking on all fours, Maia gets funny! She walks side ways really slowly and arches her back . Whistle, no matter where or what she is doing she runs right up to my face ! This site of cat sounds is pretty funny! It's kessels.com/catsounds, all kinds of kitty sounds!
I tried it on Go and Yon who were napping and they woke up and stared! Yeah, I think I detected a look of concern.

JC, who is rarely alarmed or frightened, did the same thing Little Joey, bless his heart, showed fear but hesitantly approached to sniff my breath then gave me a little lick on my hair. The tongue-lolling seems to be the big alarm factor, altho the panting noise gets their attention.
Ah, the fun things we share on TCS

Elora's not around but Mia just did that 'stalking' thing...just sorta crouched down a bit and started moving towards me very cautiously, step by step, inch by inch...eyes & ears alert. She finally came up to me and put one paw very cautiously on my thigh & waited for me to put my hand to her face so she could sniff @ it and make sure it was me after all.

Elora just showed up and didn't seem impressed at all. She just sat there and pressed her ears flat back (looks like a great horned owl) but that was all the reaction I got from her. Mia, in the meantime, is over by my other side still trying to sniff me....

Little did all of you know, but this was an experiment to see how many crazy cat people, worldwide, could be secretly videotaped panting like maniacs at their cats

Lol @ that!

I have to say, after starting this thread the thought of people panting at their cats around the world did enter my mind. How funny.

Its quite interesting that they behave this way, isnt it?

Thanks to everyone who has been brave enough to try this goofy experiment - its great to see the results - keep em coming!

I can't believe I just did this, but I just tried it with Harvey and Forest. Harvey, who's my shy, aloof cat just sat and stared at me. Forest got really freaked out and came and started meowing and pawing at my leg. I feel kinda bad for upsetting him.
