Our cat went downhill quickly after feeding the Special Kitty on Saturday morning. I saw the recall notice and checked our packs. Our pack lots were not on the recall list. It is possible that she got some 'bad' packs before then. Anyhow, we're off to the Vet for a kidney test. I just wonder how they determined what lots were tainted and when? Don't use any of this stuff until all of the facts are out. Our Wal-Mart pulled all of them.

I just called the number on my Whiskas wet food pouch and you can be SAFE in feeding Whiskas cat food because it is NOT a part of the recall. They said Whiskas and Pedigree for dogs is all safe.

Thank God! I did feed my cats a couple of pouches of Iams wet food so I worry about that, but primarily I have been buying them Whiskas pouches on a regular basis.

What about a seperate post with media links, and FDA information. That way we can keep track of what the media is reporting and also what the FDA is reporting without having to scroll through this post. What do you think? Let me know and I will start it if you all think its a good idea

I know what you mean about refusing food, it is worrisome at a time like this. I know I can't please every single one of them every day...but the other day all 8 of my inside cats refused a regular favorite...and 5 outside cats did too. It was really odd to see 14 cats turn down the food they normally eat pretty well.

Do we know if any of the companies are paying to have lab tests done?

I think that is very wise. I threw out the non-affected pouches I had too. Look at it this way: If you were told that only the frozen dinners marked #123 were poisonous, and you had one marked #124, would you risk eating it yourself?

I'm sorry your cat got ill
This just makes me so furious.

Over the past couple of days, I've started weaning the kitties off moist food. THis afternoon I fed one can of tuna and all hard food to the "gang". It seems that they are tolerating the change well and none are starving. I still think there is more to the kidney issue than we'll ever know.
Tonight I am loading a bag full of the remaining moist food and am headed to WalMart with receipt in hand.
No more moist food until this mess is sorted out, we find the cause of the problem and a satisfactory solution is reached.

only wet - and only certain ones.

The best thing to do is to go to the website for the brand you use and view their recall info - Menu Foods site has discrepanices and is not complete.

Also, the source of the problem is wheat gluten, which is a protein source. Menu Foods had a new supplier of wheat gluten and that is where the problem began. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17650075

Saturday I was at my vet for an unrelated issue and he said (before they mentioned it was wheat gluten) that it is going to end up being some sort of fungal issue. He also said that while there have "only" been 10 reported cases, that because most of the brands are bottom of the barrel no-name brands mostly used by low income people, that there are a LOT more cases that will never be reported.

I have to return a bunch of Nutro pouches this afternoon.

Therefore those named foods are not "tainted".... my brain isn't working too well tonight.

ETA: Nevermind, just saw the PDF Natalie posted.
I heard purina was one of the recalled brands, They make friskees.
They're not on the site but I just heard it on the news 2 minutes ago.

And also, My grandfathers cat died about a week ago, He had kidney failure.

This is from Purina's web site:

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products are being withdrawn by Nestlé Purina, including those pouches contained in multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other Purina products are affected by Menu’s recall.

If this isn't enough to make you scream, I don't know what is...animals died during testing of product according to 1010 WINS:
http://www.1010wins.com/pages/309721...ntentId=378484

Menu Foods told the FDA it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20. It began new tests on Feb. 27.

During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and some seven animals -- the mix of species was not immediately known -- died, Sundlof said. The contamination appeared more deadly to cats than to dogs, he said.

Yeah ... also how hard is it to give the suppliers name so if any other companies use that one they could pull there stuff ... Or the other thought of How many human products have other parts of the questionable wheat ???

Been looking round the internet to find out what toxins would cause renal failure in cats (and dogs).

Ethylene Glycol (Antifreeze) seems to come up a lot.
Certain species of Lily.
Some rat and mouse poison.
Pesticides incorrectly used

and a whole load more.

I know if some food item (human or otherwise) is tainted in this country, the press very quickly release what's caused the problem but usually worded in such a way that if they are wrong, there would be no comeback on them.
