Please also use that list (a pdf file) that is on the Petsmart site.

It is so upsetting, so many folks on my crf list realizing they fed one of the foods, folks on my pet retailers list with losses...it is a horror.
I'm having a problem getting onto the Petsmart website, but my boys eat some Science Diet dry (Adult), but I thought the website I saw earlier was only for the Science Diet wet, is that correct?

Yes, all the recalls concern wet food in cans or pouches only, no dry foods were recalled. And it's only certain varieties of wet food - generally cuts and gravy, re Science Diet it is a number of their Savory Cuts varieties, 2 for kittens, don't recall how many for adults and 2 for mature.

The vet said it was very odd that a 4 and 1/2 month old kitten would have the disease. I free fed him Nutro dry food and then 1 and a half packages of Wegmans wetfood, which is on the list. Now it is concerning me if these two events could be related. I also have Duma's sister who I had blood tested and thus far, she shows no kidney damage. However, she doesn't like soft food.

It is ironic this information comes out after losing one of my kittens. As a pet owner, I try to do everything I can for my cats and my mind was left wondering after losing one at such an early age.

I left a message for the FDA. This could be a coincidence, but it is so odd.
Welcome to TCS.
I wish your beginning here was under happier circumstances.

The loss of Duma seems like to much of a coincidence to be ignored.
I am glad that you reported your experience to the FDA.
I am sure that there are many people who haven't put 2&2 together yet.

What a wonderful relief that Duma's sister is OK.

Please stay around.
TCS is a wonderful place for support and friendship.
RIP Duma

Thank you so so very much for helping me with that!

Oh, boy - Joey and JC are jubilant at getting the Fancy Feast tonight
My other cats enjoy Friskies - not the best food, but they get their Royal Canin crunchies.

I did not realize that there was a thread in the Lounge too.
My posts about this recall have been in the Heath Forum.

Dexter and Sadie ate Nutro Pouches and had complete blood and urine lab work done today.
We won't know the results for 24 to 48 hours.

Here is a link to the thread in Health.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Duma. It does seem like too much of a coincidence.

I had some of the Nutro pouches that weren't of the affected dates, and returned it all to Petco today. They took it back with no receipt and no problem. Of course, I don't know if Tailer (the only one who was getting it) has previously gotten some that was of the affected dates...I'm really worried about him and will be keeping a REAL close eye on him.

Now that we know what food is being recalled, what about our cats that ate this food? What signs do we look for? What are the symptoms?

Look for anything out of the ordinary, such as lethargy, inappetance, dehydration, dilute urine and so on. If your cat seems unwell, it's worth having a kidney panel done to check the kidney function. According to the FDA information about the recall, "The signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs."

I feed my cat Iams pouches (tuna and salmon sauce with chicken bits) and Iams weight control dry food. 2-3 weeks ago the pouches were all of a sudden discontinued in my supermarket, no reason given, and the remaining pouches were being sold at a discount. I bought 2 weeks worth, and had some from the previous week. Maybe a coincidence, but her feces smelled pretty bad, which was a bit unusual. Today, she slept most of the day, which is also unusual. When I'm home, she's usually crying for attention.

Otherwise, she seems okay, seems to be eating normally.

The companies must have known something was or might have been wrong with the food, yet still sold them anyway, and the supermarket shouldn't have sold the remaining pouches.

I tried to get onto the iams website, but it's down due to "necessary maintainance", so I can't get any more info.

I'm very nervous and will run out tomorrow am and get other brands of food.

I was so relieved that the 9 Lives canned wasn't on there- it's the only one I've managed to hide Bird's thyroid meds in successfully...
, not to mention all my cats are older... scary, scary.

I know many pet owners were/are frantic when things like this happens, I was too! I think so far it seems like the company involved is doing a good job getting the information out. Look at how many brands are involved and how many cans/pouches are being recalled and they don't even know the problem yet. This is a logistics nightmare. I saw a video on MSNBC of a owner who had to put their dog down likely due to this food problem. It's very sad. I hope this will make pet food companies even MORE diligent in producing safe food for our pets.

2 years ago I was in South America for 6 weeks and was happy to return and see my family and of course Dusty a 4 year old beige tabby that had more personality than most people. The minute I stroked Dusty's back I knew something was wrong. I was able to feel his spine indicating that he was losing weight. I took him to the vet and discovered that he had renal failure which is almost always fatal in cats. He fought bravely but after intensive treatment, fluids and hope, he died within 3 months. A very sad day. Dusty loved moist food and seldom ate dry.
I began reading on Renal disease in cats and found it is fairly common but no one has linked it to glutens or other toxins. Ater working in medicine for near 30 years, I was suspicious that there was a cause. It occurs too frequently in cats to be just a coincidental disease IMHO. (Google renal failure in cats and check out some of the forums)
I can't help but think that we are just seeing the "tip of the iceberg" and I really wonder if some of the ingredients in canned food could be the cause.
I've always thought that cats were special animals and have 5 now. I've been feeding them 9 lives-tuna/egg and Meow mix-market select along with various dry foods.
Starting in the morning I am going to start weaning the moist food and see if I can let them transition to dry food supplemented with home cooked chicken/beef/fish.
A question, does anyone out there only use dry food for their kitties?
Thanks

Jazzpicker-

I am so very sorry to hear about Dusty and how it must have devastated you.

My cat got 1 pouch of Iams moist food every morning (tuna or salmon sauce with chicken bites). She only licked the sauce and rarely ate any of the chicken. I have before me one packet that is recalled. Other than that she ate Iams weight control dry food. I would have to say then that her diet consisted of 99% or more dry food.

Of the 10 reported deaths, 9 were cats,1 was a dog..but that number will grow. On the pet business list I am on, someone has just realized this may be the reason for the abrupt death of a healthy young pup, and another lost their cat to sudden kidney failure a week ago. I know confirmation will need to happen, but we really have no idea yet of the impact of this.
