My niece's 10th birthday is next Friday, and we're headed down for a double-digit birthday party next weekend. I have the distinction of being the cool aunt, so I have to come up with an appropriately cool gift. I usually don't have any problem finding something for her, but I'm feeling kinda stuck for something different this time.

She's a mostly girly girl...loves clothes, American Girl dolls, and her new kitten. She just got her ears pierced. She also has a tiny bit of a tomboy side that likes to fly fish with my brother. My sister and I got her a bunch of American Girl stuff for Christmas, so I don't necessarily want to do that again.

Any ideas?

You could always do what I do for my niece, awesome silver jewelry from the silverjewelryclub.com.
My niece's birthday is January, so this year I got her a cute garnet pendant with a 16 inch box chain and matching garnet earrings.

If she 'just' got her ears pierced though, you'll want to avoid earrings unless they are surgical steel for a while.

We get stuck once they hit double digits and start buying giftcards or giving them cash!

what about a subscription to a magazine - I dont know what they do in your country but I am sure there will be something appropriate for a 10yr old

how about a ipod or a video ipod? or a generic mp3 player? Or register a domain in her name? She can then blog, do podcast, video podcast, which cost little or no money at all. She can probably start a podcast about American dolls. Kids would love that.

I recently bought a niece a scrapbooking kit with disposable cameras (that was a huge hit) and jewelry making supplies.

check out findgift.com
I can always find something on there. They let you select who it is for, by age, etc.

Thanks, everybody, for the great ideas!! I went shopping this weekend, and got her a bunch of stuff: a new outfit, a gift certificate for Claire's Boutique so she can shop for some earrings, some of those cute bright colored nail polishes from Sally's, a make-your-own choker kit, and a "friends journal" scrapbook that has spots to write about her friends and places to put pictures.

I loved the iCat and iPod ideas, but she just got an iDog and the Disney MP3 player for Christmas.

I'm so excited! I can't wait to see her next weekend!!! (We're best friends, you know...we even pinky promised on it!)

I am also the cool aunt, so I understand the pressure!
I hope she loves her gifts!
