I don't know anything about the home ones, but I sometimes work in antipartum and have to do fetal heart assessments and check for baby placement.

They are basically ultra sounds.

So long as you are getting proper medical care and there are no complications, there is no need to be monitoring your baby's heart beat at home.

Oh but there is so much joy in hearing the heart beating. you can even record it and email it...how neat is that.
I guess working in an NICU for 4 years has made me a bit nervous.

So do they really work? Or did I just waste $25
Have you tried it yet?

If it works I might get one for my daughter so everyone can hear her babys heartbeat.

I did and I couldnt hear anything...just my bowels
and my heart beat. they say wait 3-4 hours after eating (heck Im way hungry by then!).
I do hope it works....
You can rent a better one from some online places and they can hear the heat beat clearer and earlier. Some go as little as $20 a month..you can also get a new one for like $400 or used one for like $150 depending upon the company.

i had one, it takes time to make sense of the noises but the heart beat will be super fast, i always thought it sounded like horses gallopping. It was awesome. hubby HAD to listen to it every night before going to sleep.
